It is a shame when people do hack jobs. Previous owner of my truck did a hack job trying to cheap out and "fix" the rust. Shoved tons of bondo into the rust holes and let it be. Rusted out a lot more metal and has made a much bigger job for me.
The bad part is some of the "hack jobs" I've seen, came from body shops. My work is not perfect and never will be, but I'm not building show vehicles. Main reason is I hate sanding, second, third and fourth reason is I hate sanding.
I'm glad you were able to trade the first truck for one with less rust. Although Diesel Brad could have been a bit more diplomatic, I have to agree with him about the first truck. A truck with that much rust was not going to be an inexpensive project truck. The hood needed to be replaced or have the rusted sheetmetal replaced with new metal welded in. If you glassed it, repeated opening and closing, no matter how gentle you were, would pop the glass off. The rusted areas above the doors would not take glass well either because of the stress of the doors closing against the area. Eventually, the glass would fail. You have to get rid of every spec of rust and paint before you can put down any glass and that is a huge amount of work.
