I am having problems with my 1991 Ford F150. It has the 5.0 L engine with I believe the C6 automatic. A few days ago the truck started running badly along with stalling and shutting off. This problem did not start gradually. One day it is running great, the next it was running terrible. I did not introduce new fuel into the fuel tank so it is not a contaminated fuel problem. I did replace the fuel filter thinking that was the problem. No go. Still runs like crap. BUT, yesterday it ran fine for about 3 hours then went back to running like crap. The poor running also affects how the transmission shifts. When it is running good the transmission shifts flawlessly. When it is running bad, the transmission will upshift, BUT it slams into each gear. Also balack smoke comes out of the exhaust when it is running poorly. Here are the basic symptoms.
1. Idles rough and stalls and runs badly and stalls, and very, very hard to get started once it is warmed up.
2. Transmission slams into each gear as it upshifts when it is running badly. Shifts
fine when it is running well.
3. Problem is intermittent at this time but is getting progressively worse.
Engine light does not come on so I can't "hotwire" the computer to get codes. Need to find out why the engine light does not come on also. Thanks, I will check those items for operation especially the vacuum to the MAP sensor. Will get back with you about possible solution.

Check engine light doesn't come on at all? not even if you turn the key to run without starting it? If so check the fuses.
The check engine light doesn't have to be on for it to have codes stored.
That and running the first test, KOEO (Key on, engine off) is one of the best ways to find a problems, CM codes stored or not.
After that test the CM, (Continues Memory) codes that have been stored are displayed (flashed). It could have several CM codes stored and never light the light.
Gentlemen, thank you for your feedback about my problem. I will pick up an OBD-1 scanner and go doing some checking. I appreciate your assistance.

You can call around town & find them, or order one from the link. The cable shown is not required but does allow you to do the scans sitting in the drivers seat, instead of bent over the fender well. That's the only brand/ model in that price range that's digital display w/ memory. After 4 years, I finally had to change the battery in mine.
