It was interesting to see the condition of the turbo. I think I'll pull it apart to get some good pics.
I watch my pyro like a hawk and NEVER run over 1000 degrees, so I was quite surprised to see the exhaust wheel melted like it was. no wonder I was having trouble building boost.
Barney
Just talking out my back side here, but let me throw something out there to maybe chew on. Besides the 550 you have, the one thing different about your truck than most of ours is the exhaust brake. You watch your EGT's like a hawk (probably from driver side probe) so that leaves a passenger side issue, exhaust brake issue, or some other thing we're not thinking about.
I know an exhaust brake is nothing new, and I understand how they work, I'm just looking for reasons your exhaust wheel was in the shape it's in.
DONE AND DONE!!!!!

one fuel leak was all we had to fix after the fact. thanks to some great help from a great friend and two great sons, Tom Dually runs again.
Initial impressions, WHOOO BOY. I got my truck back! I've still got to drive it some to get the air out. but boy does it run!
the 38R does like to talk, can't wait to get the house behind it to see what it will really do. the fuel system is way cool, 65 PSI rock solid, no air and a cooler.
Tom hasn't run this smooooth in a long time. idle is sweet and the cruise is so easy. as soon a the fun wears down alittle I get a MPG reading.
I'm gunna go crawl in the shower and wash the diesel off and have some ribs and beer.
thanks for sharing this little adventure.
BillyBob-- yes she has a sister but she's nothing like Cheryl. sorry I think I got the one and only. Cheryl can rebuild your engine, hang, tape and texture your drywall, fix your sprinkler system and still cook a gourmet meal before sun down
I agree will Brendan, I got the better end of the deal! I do't know why she likes me but I'm sure glad she does!!!
I've met Cheryl (and Barney) and you couldn't ask to meet better people. And yes, she knows wrenches for sure. Barney's got himself a great one, but I'm not sure about Cheryl's end of the deal!!
I agree man both Barney and Cheryl are great people!!!!!

Glad to hear that all is done and that your happy with it Barney. The 38R's love to sing for sure....
How "new" of a 38R is it? I just bought a new one and I can barely hear it; and I have an e99 with no sound deadening in the cab at all. The previous one I had was thee "fat lady" singing...
Supposedly the newest ones have some changes that definitely quiets them down. I have yet to tow with it to compare under load, but daily driving I almost have to listen for it.
Barney, you'll definitely love that setup for towing!! I still would like to get a 6.0L intercooler on, to help with EGTs.
Adam, I just bought the turbo from Clay, so I'm assuming its fairly new. as worn out as my old turbo was, it wouldn't sing at all.
Like Cheryl said"its nice to hear Tom whistling again"
Hey Rick, sure could have used your supervision on this one.
Yep, Cheryl's new house is ordered. goes into production June 4-5. should be done about 4 weeks after that. Off topic but how is the oil spill affecting you?
I'll take the turbo apart tonight and get some pics!
OK pics are in the album: Modding Tom Dually 5/29/10. Check them out. More to come tomorrow. It's already been 12 + hrs into the modifications. We will see how late Barney can go. I think it has been a long enough day.
Can't find the album, I really want to see the pics. Can someone walk me through how to get to it. Congrats on your mods!
In this case it's actually so easy, even I can explain it! Go back to post #34, Joe (Izzy351) put up a link to the album.
Thanks Pete, and Joe. Don't know how I missed that. Good job Barney! I have a bunch o goodies coming from GUZZLE this week, and get to pull my turbo for a Wicked Wheel swap, thats why I wanted to check out the PICS.
