Installed mine last night. Took about 1 1/2 hours but I had to run around and get tools instead of planning a bit ahead. The only trouble I had was when I took the existing u-bolts off the lower Shock mounts, the shocks extended to theri full length (duh!!!) which made it difficult to get the new (much larger u-bolts) and sway bar plates lined up. I finally used my floor jack under the shock to get it pushed up enough that I could handle it by hand.
BTW - Hellwig's instructions are greatly lacking in clarity. Look at the wahsers carefully and read EVERYTHING that comes in the box. After I got everything bolted on but not tightened up, I found a separate enclosure that describes the washers and there intended use. Had to re-arrange my washers then. Also the parking brake holder on the Drivers side is wierd. I ended up just getting a separate bolt and nut from my junk box to remount.
Very happy with the results however and well worth the effort in 90 degree heat......
Thanks very much for the info.; now all I need to do is find some time.......................
need to remember to remove the Jack Stands before you do all the final adjustments and tighten all the nuts and bolts if you put jack stands under the frame. The weight of the vehicle needs to be on the axle for proper sway bar alignment.
If you decide to use Jack stands be careful under the truck. Until my belly gets bigger, I can still slide under to do work.
I've noticed alot of ppl on here have the Hellwig bar installed. Does it make a big difference in ride and handling??? Are most of you towing alot? Just curious. Thanx.
Somebody point me to before and after pictures of their Excursions rear end...I really wnat to see how the Hellwig is installed and how different it looks down there...
I haven't bought one in awhile, so I don't know about price the comparisons, but I ordered my rear Hellwig from SummitRacing.com for my 2001 4WD.
Daddyof4 - The addition of a rear anti-swaybar will give you the biggest bang for bucks spent in ride improvement. It matters not if you're towing ... the Hellwig reduces body-roll in situations you wouldn't imagine, but you'll feel the improvement.
Anyone got a stock front sway bar (2000 V10 4x4) sitting around the garage collecting dust? The Excursion I just picked up doesn't have one installed at all...
