Got 95000 miles on my van and I'm getting ready to change the plugs. After reading the horror stories about the 5.4 3v plugs, I have a concern - are the original plugs in the 4.6 a two piece design like the 5.4 3v plugs? I'm concerned with the plugs coming apart during removal. I've always used a top tier gas that is supposed to prevent carbon build up, so I hope that helps. I'm thinking of using Champions for replacement. I just replaced my upper and lower ball joints so I'm warmed up and ready to go. Any info greatly appreciated.
I've been told by a number of independent mechanics that the best plugs for fords are Motorcraft...the genuine ford brand. The same guys have told me the best for GM...i also have a suburban...are AC Delco. So these guys are not "brand loyal".Just my 2 cts.

I tend to believe them.
There is more and more "secret" knowhow that car makers are putting in their parts that is not obvious....
Ask anyone who had a Fram air filter for the 5.4 fail on them.
So I bought a set of the original motorcraft plugs and started to get to work. I took out the rear driver side plug and it looked like new. Clean and still had the gap required. My van doesn't use any oil. So I thought about it for awhile after looking at what is involved with getting the other plugs out, the possibility of mistreading a plug, tearing a boot or breaking a coil, in addition to wear and tear on ME and decided to leave 'em in! May sound nutty but I think they'll probably hold up fine. I'm getting between 22 and 23 mpg on the interstate so my engine is healthy. The plug I took out wasn't difficult to turn so I think I'm ok for awhile.
