i have a 95 ford F350 with the 7.3L psd and wanted to put an intercooler on it i was wondering what kind of differences do the intercoolers do to these engines like noise power and behavior any info would be helpful thanks
Ya no power increase really just help you use all the power you have with injectors and other mods. All they do is keep it cool, really helpful when towing.
I did a progressive install of a Banks Powerpack kit. Downpipe, then turbine housing and intercooler, then chip & gages.
The downpipe made a noticable difference in throttle response in low-speed and stop-and-go driving. Truck could get out of its way at low speeds and moderate throttle.
Intercooler and turbine housing did not make a noticable difference in drivability or power.
Chip on top of everything else, yeah, that made a difference.
Conventional wisdom is that downpipe will help a bit with power and definitely EGTs; intercooler largely just with EGTs. Intercooler likely will hurt throttle response a bit, since it's a larger volume of air that needs to be compressed before it gets to the cylinders. I don't know what the EGT differences were because I wasn't running gages in stock configuration.
If you're looking for improvements, start with the downpipe and a 6637 filter (or equivalent). I would consider an intercooler as part of a package including chip and gages, but not sure it makes sense as a stand-alone upgrade, and especially not before air filter and downpipe.
I saw no difference in adding my intercooler with throttle response, boost builds a smidge slower but it pulls harder and longer if you have ugrades, my hot tunes really shine, and the best part is the egts don't spike to high numbers any more, it's a slower incrimental Gain in temperature
