starting problems.
I just put a new transmission into my 1983 f150. I went to start it up to take it for a test drive and nothing happened, no attempt at even trying to turn over, no noises or anything. The only wires i had to remove were the ones to the starter and the wire on the negative battery terminal, so im thinking that one of those was not put back right, any help or suggestions would be great.

Most trannies have a neutral safety switch of some kind. If you have a automatic, the neutral safety is mounted on the driver's side of the tranny behind the shift lever. If you want to see if that's the problem, unplug the wires going to the switch on the tranny. Looking at the plug there should be two red/blue wires. If you use a jumper to jump across these two wires, that will complete the circuit to the starter solenoid.

Try moving the gear shift lever while you have the key in the start position.....Have emerg brake on and foot on manual brake. This too should check for a mispositioned or bad MLPS (neutral safety switch).

details
i bridged the solenoid with two screwdrivers to see if that would work, and it did, the truck started up, but when i went to put it into gear it wouldn't shift at all, what does this mean for the starting problem and what needs to be adjusted so it shifts?
