Im getting ready to swap the zf5 into my 86 and was wondering what all is needed off the donor truck, Ive got the drop brackets, the cross member and the fly wheel. Is there anything else needed? Im also concerned about my driveshaft lenghts. Any help appriciated!!
If you give us no info why should you expect an intelligent response with info you need? In any event, I'll give you what I have. This is a bolt in deal.
Big block ZF5 4x4 is same length as a C6, bolts right up to everything. Just make hole in firewall for clutch master and install firewall reinforcement kit E3TZ-7K509-A.
Small block 4x4 will require a longer front driveshaft and shorter rear. IIRC front shaft will be 42" or 38.5"... Forget which. They are hard to find in junkyards and you may have to pick a rear shaft and shorten it. Also will require moving trans crossmember rearward (if coming from C6 or NP435). Yadda-yadda rest is same as big block.
K thanks! Im sorry for not much info i was kinda in a hurry! The trans coming out of the 86 f250 460 is a T-18, Are the drop brackets the same? Do I need to use the ones off the donor truck? What about the crossmember?
Don't be sorry, Those details will get you a better answer quicker!
I forget if the ZF5 4x4 and T-18 4x4 are the same lengths, I don't think they are so you'll need drive lines, that brings up another tidbit of needed info ... cab size on both trucks.
My 86 is a regular cab and the zf came out of an ext. cab, How do you tell the between the difference t-18 and t-19? Im not sure which one is in that 86. Thank you guys for helping me!!!
Do you still have access to the truck that the ZF came from? If so, measure the front driveshaft length and compare it to the one in the truck. If they are the same, then the rear should also be correct, as far as length.
I just did the ZF swap in March. My truck had a 460, T-19, and BW1345, and is the Extra Cab 4x4. I pulled a ZF S542 out of a '89, along with the crossmember (all three pieces), and flywheel. The new ZF bolted in using the crossmember from the donor truck, and drive shafts needed no modification as the ZF and T-19 are the same length.
