I have a 1967 F250 pickup that the motor finally decided to die, The machine shop wants $1300 to rebuild it. If this isn't bad enough the FMX auto trans is going bad too and they want $1000 bucks to rebuild it. This is alot of money for a $600 pickup I bought 5 years ago, so this is what I am asking if anybody has done this before. My grandparents are giving me a 1978 LTD that has a 400 and C6 auto , that has only about 50,000 miles on it. They bought it brand new and took really good care of it and the motor and transmission are in excellent shape. Is it possible to replace the 352 FE and FMX auto with the 400 and C6 auto out of the LTD. I was thinking that I could use the 1977-79 351/400 motor mounts for this. The car is free and I am short on cash right now so is it worth the hassle.
The 400 will sit fine on the fe stands with the motor mounts you mentioned. But there are other expenses involved.
Are the tailshaft length the same on the fmx an C6 ? Drive shaft work can get expensive. exhaust will have to be flanged up to the 400. I think of the value of the car running and sellable versus the value of the motor and trans. could be more cost effective to sell it and scout for a 360 or 390. my thoughts for what the're worth. lobuck
