2003 F-150 Supercrew 4wd with the 5.4 Triton with just over 200,000 km (app 120,000 miles) on the odometer. Recently I have noticed some odd response from this truck at highway speed. This doesn't occur often or regularly but is quite shocking when it does happen. A rather loud thump and the truck almost feels like it jumps. Then all seems normal again. I noticed last night it seemed to happen when I was in cruise control and the truck had to kick-down a gear to climb a grade. My wife told me she most commonly had it occur at around 80 kph (45 mph). I am thinking it is time to visit the transmission shop but was hoping some of you might be able to shed a little light on this beforehand.
does it happen out of the blue or just when you hit the gas some more? it happens when it kicks down? sounds like whats wrong with mine. i think its my TQ but i dont know. could be the trannys shot too.
It tends to just happen out of the blue and always at highway speed. I've never had it happen at less than 100 kph (although wife claims it has happened at 80 for her)
I would lean towards a missfire. Check to see if you have any pending codes. When was the last time you did plugs? Are they all the original coils?

Don't know about the 03 model but when my 97 misfired before turning on the CEL I thought I had a trans problem, don't know why these trucks go ape-**** from a misfire ...
Oh and it was most common at 40 to 45 mph.
I have had to change one COP, but ..... I am embarassed to say the plugs are definitely overdue for a change. I tend to spend more time playing with the Rumblefish (my 78) than this truck. I'll try that. Thanks for the tip.
