I have a 1993 f250 4x4 with a 5.8 and I was wondering if it has a roller cam?I also have a 1969 351 sitting in my garage and Im gonna do a 408 stroker in one of these motors. If the 93 has a roller cam im thinking that might be the right direction. Also does anyone know where to get some cheap after market heads?I should mention this is going in a 74 bronco.
thanks Ben
Most likely your '93 5.8L is not equipped with a roller cam. If the block has a F4TE casting number it is "roller-ready". Look near the starter for the casting number
If its a roller ready block thats the one i would use . Im with conanski , don't cheap out on the heads on a 408 , the heads will make or break your build , its worth the extra money JMO....Lew
ok so I checked and it is a f4te . This makes me happy
this motor has about 100000 miles but im on a budget. So maybe ill change the rings.I have a performer manifold, shorty headers with flowmasters,513 gears, ZF 5speed and holley projection. Its going in my 74 bronco so its about 4000 lbs and I want it to hall ***, idle with a little lope and still have power all the way through. I guess low end is a little more important than top end but I still want it all.I do have 69 351 heads sitting in a my garage I could use. So what do you think the best combo would be on a low budget. I am going to change the cam.
thanks Ben
41 year old technology.....does not make a lot of sense to me. Seriously consider modern aftermarket heads if you want to make best use of your investment.
I understand aftermarket heads would be much better but im a little short on funds.I looking for a recommendation for a roller cam that will lope at idle and give unbelievable power all the way through.
The '69 heads flow better than all late model heads except GT40's, but they could still use some porting. With those heads on this motor the powerband will be from 0-4500rpm so a cam that maximizes power in that range is what you want, something like Comp 35-510-8.
