Roller Cam?

Looking at some of the old posts about the cams in these trucks (I did a search) it seems that some came with roller cams and some did not? I have a 96 F150 with a 302, is there any way to tell if has a roller cam other than tearing it apart? This truck sees semi regular mud time and also is a daily driver, i want to be able to hear the cam talking, yet still be able to tow my bass boat. it has a 5 spd transmission and a gear swap is coming soon, not sure of 4.11s or 4.56s. any suggestions for a cam? or which gears i should use? the truck is sitting on 33s now and im considering 35s one day if the budget ever permits the extra lift

The 96 302 should be a roller mass air motor, so you will have alot of cams to pick from . If you go to 35s i would go to 456 gears. Long tube headers will help alot to..... Lew

Isky 371257-265.. it's similar to the Crane Truck power cam which probably isn't available anymore.

Conanski, looking at the specs for that cam, i would have to rewire it to the HO firing order, i can do that, but i have also been looking at a comp cam grind number 35-308-8 that is a little bigger, its a .533/.533 lift with 210/215 duration at .50 with 116 degrees lobe seperation. i know i would have to change the valvesprings, but do you think this cam would be ok? the rpm range is 1200 to 5500

scratch that, looking on comps website it says that i would have to have the heads machined to fit, not looking to do all that right now, will probably go with the isky

Your '96 motor uses the HO firing order so there are no changes to make. Part of the reason I suggested that cam is because it keeps valve lift under 1/2", that seems to be about the limit for the stock valvetrain. It also has a tighter LSA and that helps make TQ.. something the 5.0 deperately needs help with.

The idle wont be very noticeable. But thats a good thing in a truck with 35's.

Did they start using the HO firing order in the truck 302 in '94 when they went roller?

I seem to remember reading that the earliest roller cams in the truck 5.0 ('92) used the old firing order. Just something I've read here over the years.

There was a few in that vintage, but its really hit and miss, and I cant think of any engine that wasnt roller cammed 94 and up.
