Hey everyone, I know I'm probably beating a dead horse here and I apologize for that. I've been searching the forums for a few hours but I don't think I've found an answer to my particular issue. Any input or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I have a 1988 F-150 with a 302 V-8. My problem is all the gauges in my instrument panel don't seem to be working properly. The oil gauge barely registers in the normal mark, the temp gauge barely reaches the normal mark, the voltage gauge doesn't move at all, and the gas gauge swings erratically from beyond the full mark to beyond the empty mark. However, the speedo and tac work fine.
I read quite a few threads that indicate that the fuel sending units can cause the erratic fuel gauge problems, but my concern is that all the gauges don't appear to be functioning properly, so I'm not sure how to proceed. I've thought about replacing the entire gauge cluster but I'm not sure that will fix it. I'm going to check the grounds but I was wondering if any of you have any other suggestions.
Thanks for the help guys and again I apologize for beating a dead horse here.
I know the senders on the engine can fail over time, so i would replace those first. The temp sender is under $10, and the oil sender is not much more. Of course, if you really want to ensure the vitals are ok just go with some inexpensive mechanical gauges. They're much easier to install than chasing the gremlins and you could get a set of oil/water/volt from Summit for under $50.
