Question Engine upgrade questions

So I've got a couple of quick questions that I'm sure I'll find the answers to here.

I'm restoring a 94 Bronco with the 5.0 engine(MAF) and I am planning on refreshing the engine while it is out and likely do a few upgrades at the same time.
Now since I had planned on doing the engine work anyway and this would be the best time to swap engines while the body is off, I'm considering a swap to a 5.8.

So ..... Would I be best to find a 5.8 from 96/7 that is MAF? I'm guessing that it would also be a roller block.?
(Upgrades I am planning on..... headers, cam, better flowing heads, intake swap, porting...not looking to take it to the track, so I suspect I won't go much farther than that)
If I was able to find one, I just need the engine c/w harness and ecm........correct?
The front end harness with the power distribution box would be the same I suspect.

Thoughts?
Suggestions?

Part of me says to do just that.......
I would like there to be plenty of power if I need it. However, if I do the same engine work to the 302 I could easily see 300 hp, maybe 350 depending on the heads/cam/porting etc that I get or do.
Do I really need any more? hmm...
I haven't entirely decided the Bronco's purpose yet. I surely never plan to rip through any mud bogs with it after the work that is going into it. Yet somehow, I don't see myself being able to stay off the unbeaten path if ya know what I mean.
It will have to pass the gov. inspection here to be plated, so I am going to rebuild it to pretty much stock for that reason. What mods if any I do to it after that are yet undecided.
In any event, if I do go ahead with a swap, I will certainly keep the 302 in case I decide to revert or sell.
I am trying to keep as much of the original vehicle as I can, so again, I just might.

Thanks, I appreciate the input.

for the amount of work no reason not to. the mpg also is about the same.

any 5.8 from 88 up will work. mass air is the electronics not the motor so that wont matter. if you want the roller cam then look for the 94-95 F150/Bronco or 94-97 F250/F350.

getting a complete motor will help tremendously as most of the hardware on the 5.0 wont transfer over. your 5.0 harness will hook up fine and the computer will run that motor fine also.

I would want a roller block definitely.
The reason I asked about the MAF engine is because it is easier system to work with as opposed to the speed density system as far as engine modifications.

also at the very least I would have a complete engine including the harness. I have read that the 5.0 ecm would run the 5.8....but, if it is available would it be better than the 5.0 ecm. I figured that everything else should be identical. Just want to make sure before I turn anything down. I have all summer to find one though if I do. I plan tackle the frame/suspension and body this summer/fall and build the engine tranny over the winter.
If all goes well, she'll see the road next summer.....

thanks for the input

what i am saying is the motors arent mass air or speed density specific. there is nothing on the engines that make them mass air or speed density. so by all means stay with your mass air harness and computer from the 5.0 to use on any efi 5.8. just dont get a 96 bronco/f150 5.8 engine as it was setup for OBD-II and has some items missing that wont make it work with your harness.

also you will be hard pressed to find a 5.8/E4OD mass air ecu since these were mainly built in Cali and only produced in 95. 96 all 5.8's got OBD-II for half ton applications.

Yeah you don't need the 5.8 EEC or wiring harness at all, so just find a complete 5.8 roller motor and build from there. With all the mods you have planned you're going to need a tuner anyway so it doesn't matter if you start with a 5.0 or 5.8 EEC.

Dave... since you're local why don't you drop me a line some time and maybe we can meet up. I'll show you what I have for my 5.8 build and the tuner and stuff.

Many thanks guys...
I understand exactly what you are saying now.
That would certainly make it easier to find a donor engine should I decide to go ahead with the swap.

Another question......Was there a specific casting number I should be looking for to confirm that the block is a roller block?

Paul,...you bet!...I'm always happy to talk about trucks or engines and If you've been down that road.....all the better.
I'll shoot you a PM.

Thanks again guys

Yep.. block casting number F4TE or later. "F4" represents 1994 in Ford casting numbers.

Throw a stroker kit in the 5.0 - no changing the exhaust, better intake, plug-and-play.

Paul, I kind of thought of that number after I asked the question. I am curious though....I was reading through engine threads last night and found a thread on 302 short blocks where you say roller blocks are E7TE & up. Are we talking different blocks?

5.0s were roller ready in 87. 2.8s weren't availiable with the assembly until 94

I'm like....2.8's???? oh wait
Took a second, but then it dawned on me....we're talking about the 5.8 not the 5.0

I do have my moments.......Thanks guzzy!

Paul.....disregard that question.

Oops! it was dark and hard to see my key board lastnight. Yeah the 5.8 started off with the roller assembly in '94. Thats why everyone wants an F4TE 351w block. It seems the half tons got all the cool stuff (mass air, roller blocks) long before the bigger brothers could have it
