just wanted to start this thread before i go any farther on this truck . ok so the pickup is a 87 (11/86) f250 4speed 2wd lariat DIESEL 89,000 miles. my dad parked years ago (sold camp trailer and bought motorhome) and finally became to much of an eyesore (allthough its not rusted at all, and is perfectly straight , just moldy full of bee nests, and had a mouse nest in jockey box) so i went up to Gaston and drug this thing to salem . this just happened the same time my 92 f250 4x4 460 auto decided to blow the seals on the tranny and stop hoilding fluid at all. so then i thought hmmm maybe ill just stuff the 6.9 in my 92 with the standard tranny and make it a 2wd till i find a tcase . boy am i glad that thought passed lol. ok so decided to make the 87 run again and drive it till i fix the tranny in the 92 .... now that thats settled here is what happened with the 6.9 so far : put fuel in it and pulled it around the shop with the loader till it started and ill be dammed if it didnt just purr like a kitten. so first money spent was 260.00 on 2 - 1000 cca batteries plus some connectors the battery on the pass side got a new marine type pos connector cause the pos cable broke in half at the connector . so i got two copper ends with holes in them and soldered the cable into them . that made her crank on her own. and with a trip permit i drove her home ! that was saturday sunday i went out to clean the engine compartment up a bit and found the water seperator ( wish i never did that) so with the water in fuel light on i decided to go ahead and pull the ring up (whoops) all that did was get air in the fuel . so after hours of cranking and charging i gave up (couldnt stand to smell the starter smoke anymore ) had to get a ride to work today . so at work i was thinking about this and decided when i got home tonight i would plug the hose that drips water out and see if i could get fuel back up to schrader valve . so im looking under the hood and seeing the lines going into and out of water separator i decide to just put a short metal tube in line and down the road i'll fix the air leaking separator . looking for a tube i found a fuel pump , hmmm maybe i'll just put fuel pump there and be sure that my leaking caps and O-rings wont suck also , walla !, good fuel to the schrader valve . ok lets fire it up . nope .... all that cranking earlier burnt the starter , so tomorow im going to pull and repair starter . btw ive allready found the fried wire on the starter , well i felt it with my hand when i reached over the starter from under the truck . it just kinda crumbled in my hand ... ok so now you're all caught up . i will not give up on this oilburner . i consider it a challenge now . and look forward to having a diesel workhorse in my fleet . if you havent allready figured out , this is my first diesel . also one more thing i just want to thank everyone for there posts , ive learned a great deal form reading these posts in the last week ,
Never crank the starter more than 20 seconds, then let it cool for 2 minutes.
I would not keep that electric pump hooked up ... For two reasons, One) I prefer the mechanical and a properly repaired system, Two) You have it pumping into the mechanical diaphragm pump, if it blows the diaphragm it will fill your motor with fuel and ruin it!
Draining the water separator and puting a bolt up is the fix if it leaks.... or you can mount a spigot on the line.........BUT keep the separator inline and use it. I would have drained all the old diesel out of the tanks....... and replaced the fuel filter. Did you do that...... if not you may be circulating BIOMATTER throught the system from sitting so long.
169 for the new (rebuilt) mitsubishi starter. cranks way fast now . i love it , next fix will be the leaking caps . holy cow . with the inline electric fuel pump .this thing leaks everywhere . at least its not sucking air and dieing .oh and if i smell diesel in the oil i'll give a few hundred miles to wash the insides of valve covers , then change oil and block of lift pump.
uhhh thats the wrong way to go about it.if just by hooking up and electric pump you get fuel coming out i dont think i would drive it and with the diesel in the oil you are asking for bigger problems.i strongly suggest you do not drive it until you at least bypass the mechanical pump.you may be tearing that thing down if not
no fuel in oil at this time ,and also , i only use the elec. pump to get fuel primed once engine fires i shut off elec. pump. once i get o-rings in and all leaks stopped i shouldnt need elec. pump at all .im still going to bypass water seperator and use a 7.3 filter with seperator. can anyone tell me the exact size of the o-rings ? ID + OD ? ty Darrin
awesome . thanks festus 7/16 ID 5/8 OD . part # 111 @ carquest 46 pennies each . two leaks fixed one to go . soon as they get more rings sent down from portland . so i drove to the shop and was showing off pickup to my boss . we walked outside and diesel was pouring out from under truck . i shut her down and went to investigate turns out the fuel pump had all it could stand and burst open on the bottom . guess they dont hold there water to well for long periods (2.5 years sitting till dad told me to haul it off) so with the biggest pair of channel locks in the shop i ripped it out and put in a new one , if it would have just lasted till this weekend i was gonna get a 7.3 mount bracket so i could use the big one inch filter .I need to adjust the clutch next.
got all the fuel leaks fixed , greased what i could underneath cleaned the engine a bit more, turned up the ip , need to work on window motors , adjust clutch , get keys made for doors, and ?
