OK KIDS! I work at a linc/merc dealership and cant take this anymore lol. I have about 2 cups of pump unleaded gas in a small can with a pretty good scoop of surgar in it...sugar just settled to the bottom no geling or bonding that i can tell so far but I will leave it sit for a while. Next I am going to try it with E85 haha

After you finish with what you are doing, carefully decant (pour) the gasoline into another clean (glass?) container, maybe using a coffee filter to catch the sugar. This will simulate passing through your fuel filter. Then allow the gasoline to air dry by evaporation and see if anything gel-like is left behind.

Be very careful and avoid sources of possible ignition!

ok so i'm starting to wonder if the gas isn't the problem. i temporarily hooked up a clean 5 gal can in the back of my truck and cleaned the carb again to see if it would run good for longer then 4 days, but it didn't help at all. the carb didn't even have the gel in the bottom of it this time. so i'm wondering if the gas isn't the problem....i just don't know what else to check? i'm thinking either dizzy or something in the carb is bad. it backfires whenever its not running good. the metering rods in the edelbrocks can't really go bad can they? it's all clean so i don't know what could be wrong with it.

OK this chevy guy I work with is talkin about holes in float bowls, leaky acc. pump diaphragm and crap like that. Have somebody go thru your carb with a good rebuilt kit or just pony up for the correct size one now...sounds like the carb needs to come off that engine either way. U go thru spark plugs alot runnin that rich...u pulled them lately?

One area that could cause the metering rods to be the root of the issue.
The old Carter AFB, which is what the edelbrock is, had problems with the metering rods plungers/bores wearing out. I thought the edelbrock housing's "Endura-shine" finish resolved this. But, if the bores or plungers are dirty or scored, the rods can hang in the raised position. I had an issue with a brand new edelbrock having a metering rod binding from the clip that holds the rod to the plunger being installed incorrectly. Right out of the box, the carb dripped fuel thru one side of the primaries at idle. After finding, and resolving, the misinstalled clip, the problem was cured.
At least the metering rods can be removed by simply removing the air cleaner, and no further carb disassembly required. I'd start by removing them, and closely inspecting the plungers/bores, and rod retaining clips.

how can you tell if its dripping gas. the metering rods look good, just a little dirty, and the clips are good.
is there a good way of telling for sure if my problem is carb or dizzy? the carb is completley clean and all the gaskets look good, but it would run good before right after i cleaned. it.

If you have available try a different carb...If you lived in OK we'd slap mine on it to see if that was the problem

To check for the dripping fuel, just take off the air cleaner, and look down the carb with the engine running, use caution though, it's like a machine.....
There shouldn't be any fuel dripping into the carb barrels, at idle, all fuel is drawn thru the idle circuit at the base of the carb.
When re-installing the metering rods/plungers, I always push them down 2-3 times to make sure they move freely, and are fully seating.
