Heated Windshield

Recently purchased a 2008 Mountaineer, our 2002 Mountaineer was recently totaled. When purchasing the car we only drove it during the day. I thought, neat it has a heated windshield, that may come in handy in the winter. After purchasing, my wife and I went somewhere at night the glare and stars through the windshield were terrible! Both the wife and I have 20/20 vision, we were having trouble seeing/reading street signs when car headlights were coming in the opposite direction. Is there anything that can be done to reduce the glare? I honestly can't believe someone at Ford thought putting little squiggle lines through a front windshield was a good idea! Any suggestions short of removing the front windshield would be great.
Also, if we have to put in a new, non-heated windshield are there any complications I need to be aware of with the electrical system?

Thanks in advance.

-Scott
