as you know a little while ago i posted a question about what this plug was:
well i found the answer!! as some guessed, it is a factory trailer brake controller harness. you have to buy an adapter kit to use the TBC of your choice, but apparently the trucks came with a universal adapter(aftermarket radio style) when new.
so now anyone afraid of the hassle of installing a trailer brake controller, its easy as pie!
I also have a 97, just looked at my trailer brake controler. It has 5 wires at the connector, Brown, White, Red, Green and Blue and is above the drivers right leg. My truck has the factory intalled 7 pin connector under the bumper and I have to use an adaptor to use it with a smaller trailer that would have the more often used 4 way flat trailer connector, is your truck set up for the 4 way flat only? From you picture it looks to be only a 2 wire connector, if so I don't think its for a trailer.
I also have the same 2 wire ( red and green ) connector on the left side, now you've got me wondering what it's for .. let you know if and when I figure it out.
the connecter by your leg should have about 5 wires. that is the main trailer harness plug. That is in all trucks...... Back at the drivers side frame by the spare tire there is a plug from the main harness to the rear harness feeding the tail lights and trailer hitch. The front or main truck harness has all the wires needed for the 7 pin plug. If you dont get the "factory trailer setup" you get a 4 pin rear harness to the rear bumper and tail lights. If you get the "trailer setup" you get a different harness with the extra wires in it. Again, all the wires are in the feeder plug by the spare tire, the rear harness is missing some wires on the standard harness......... To make everything work you need a couple of relay contacts up under the hood inside the fuse box. If you did not get the "trailer setup" they normallly leave those two relays out of the fuse box and you will have to add.
