I think it bears mentioning that deleting the EGR cooler is tampering with a federally mandated emissions control device, and if the time comes that emissions testing is required in your state you will have to re-install a cooler if you want to pass the test.
Ultimately it's up to the individual, but it's definitely worth thinking about.
Gauges, gauges, and yet again, gauges. So many problems can be caught early on if "you" have a good quality set of gauges. Several ways of going about it depending on your budget and tastes. No matter if you choose an OBDII monitor or if you do the true analog gauges, you should get at least one analog gauge for Fuel Pressure. That isn't supported by our truck's computers, so it'll need to be had the old fashioned way. Just about any OBD-II monitor(Insight, DashDAQ; I would not do the LiveWire) will support EGTs and then just about everything else that I would suggest that you have to maintain a healthy truck can be had through the computers(ECT, TFT, EOT etc).
Now this is something else that I would consider. If you are a hands on, like to fix it yourself kind of person, I would highly suggest getting a good quality scan tool as well or a full diagnostic tool that includes code scanning as well. Just with code reading alone most of those diagnostic PC based software can pay for themselves really really quickly. Just something else to think about. Most of the OBDII monitors have basic code reading abilities, but I'm talking about reading all 9 modules on our truck's not just the generic and maybe the enhanced powertrain.
Tex I have read alot of your posts and respect your opinions. I have one question about PC base ODB scanner/monitor. What would you suggest for around $200.00? I have the CAN ODB2 with ABS scantool by INNOVA #3160, but am not please with it. I was looking at the AutoEnginuity PC Scan Tool (USB). AutoEnginuity PC Scan Tool (USB)
What are your thoughts? Sorry about the hijack post.

I have my EGR cooler and cat on a shelf in the garage in case Florida decides to test one day.
That is the exact one that I use. I do not use their proline scantool, but just their regular one. I have 4 licenses for it now and I already have paid for those in the first year that I've had it. I like it a lot. If you do get that, make sure you have the 8.2 software version as that one as a lot of the actuation commands that make using the software so much "fun".
For the money, I think AE is the best one out there.
