Hello, I'm considering buying a 2005 6.0 Diesel Excursion and trying to figure out what an oil change cost on average; both at a Jiffy Lube type place and to do it myself. Your feedback appreciated..thanks!
I spent about $80 doing it myself. I used the Rotella synthetic and the Motorcraft filter. Pretty easy considering you can slide right under the Ex. The dealer wanted $95 for the dino oil. The nice thing about the 6.0 is the filter is on top and doesn't drip when you replace it.
I would never have anyone change my oil and it is not only due to the savings. I saw a kid pull the wrong plug one time and I don't know if engine oil went into the tranny or what because I didn't stick around.
Never pay someone to do something you can do yourself...'nuff said.
I change my own oil because no matter where I take it they just can't seem to do it right. If you do it yourself, you know it's done right and don't have to deal with the frustration of getting someone to fix a problem they caused. Besides, it's ridiculously easy on a 6.0...
I guess I'm a bit biased since I own an oil changing business.... I do have quite a few customers who change their own oil but buy their Amsoil or even oil & fuel filters from me since I carry the OEM parts. The biggest thing for most people is finding the time to do it and then disposing of 15 quarts of oil properly. Diesel owners tend to be a bit more discriminating on who works on their truck - and we actually invite the owners into the bay so they can watch the work being performed. I even have customers who only want a specific person to work on their vehicle and since we're there to provide customer service it's an easy request to honor. Don't discount all service shops because of one or two experiences - find a good one - ask for references. The guys behind the counter at the local parts store can be invaluable - ask for their recommendation.
On the cost of the oil change - figure 15 quarts of your favorite oil + the filter (~$20) - so you're looking at anywhere from $60 - $110 depending on brand of oil and if it is dyno or synthetic.
