Plumbing question

Plumbers, I need to replace a saddle valve, which is located on my main waterline in the house. Can I replace the valve with a new one in the same location? This tap supplies water to my swamp cooler 1/4 inch line. Not excited about having to replace the length of 3/4" pipe it is on, unless absolutely necessary.

I don't see why not, as long as the 3/4 main is in good condition. Why do you need to replace it? Is the valve bad or leaking, if there is a leak are you sure it is not the saddle?

I tried that once.
The 1/2" pipe that I had a saddle valve on, had corrosion/oxidation in the hole made by the valve.

I wound up cutting out that piece of pipe and putting a 1/4 turn shut-off valve in the pipe. (NO problems, since.)

I'm not a big fan of saddle valves.

To "stop" the leak last night, I did tighten the saddle, so I am assuming it is there rather than the valve itself. Age of the valve is a possible issue, as is the compression end of the 1/4" fitting. I hadn't considered the corrosion possibility. This connection is for water for my evaporative (swamp) cooler.

I'll go ahead and remove the old one and inspect it. I'm not a fan of them either Blue, but I am a very rookie plumber! I'd much rather have a soldered connection. Seems like every time I start a plumbing repair I end up fixing a lot more!

Thanks for the input.

I think the real leak was due to both the ferrule being loose on the 1/4" tubing, as well as the nut for the tubing being split! Cut the 1/4" tubing back about 1 1/2" and replaced the ferrule and the nut. Saddle was leaking too, just tightened it up and so far so good. Maybe replace the saddle valve at a later date just to be on the safe' side.

It doesn't matter if your a rookie plumber or a contractor plumbing is always one step ahead & two back. I use to install & repair sprinkler systems in my younger days so I know a little about plumbing. If I have to do a repair anymore I go get everything to replace the whole works.
