overheating

I have an 85 F-250, 5.8L W. I have been having trouble with the engine overheating. I have replaced the radiator to the bigger option, t-stat, sending unit, fan clutch, and water pump. I have also flushed the engine. It still seems to run hot. It's driving me crazy. The truck runs great, but if idling for extended times it will get warm. I read something about a voltage regulator for the instrument cluster. My fuel gauge also is a little "funny" at times. Thanks for the help.

My first question was, "What is this guy using to figure out the engine is running warm?"
Seems you're using factory gauges, OK.... We need NumberDummy if you want to go
down the IVR route, I *think* what you MIGHT need/want is a Motorcraft GR513 but
there are like 10 different variants of those things.

But, before throwing parts at it *****-nilly, what do you mean, EXACTLY, when you say
the gas gauge is "a little 'funny'?" What about the oil pressure gauge? If the IVR is
causing the problem, the temp, gas & oil pressure gauges will all misbehave together. If
it's just your gas gauge, a worn out tank sending unit comes to mind.

Seems to me you need a reliable way of determining if, in fact, your engine is running
warm. An aftermarket gauge with actual numbers is good, maybe one of those laser
temperature things will help. Factory gauges are good for general indications only and
certain components are known to wear out after 2-3 decades (one of which is the IVR).

The IVR thing is mounted to the upper-LH corner of the instrument cluster on the back
and attaches to the printed circuit with something similar to 9V battery clips and looks
like so:

Is there a shroud around the fan?

Thanks for the help. You are right ctubutis. I do need an accurate way of determining the overheat condition. The gas gauge has always worked incorrectly and I also am thinking that both fuel level senders are in question. The oil gauge usually just stays pegged (but not over-pressured). And now the temp gauge. It has a shroud, the fan clutch is working properly, both radiator hoses are getting warm. At this point I need to see if I am truly overheating. Do you by chance know the part # of the IVR? Again, thank you for your help. I am trying to get ready for summer camping, and I can't be overheating while hauling that camper and my family around.

Go to the store and buy a cheap temp gauge for $16.00 and install it under the dash. Then you can see what's really going on. Even if you get the factory gauge working, what is "normal"?

We need to know to waht temp your engine gets when sitting idling when it overheats. Tell us that first. Generally 230* is where damage starts to occur, keep it below 210 to be safe.

What is your initial timing set to?
