overheat issue

I have had a problem recently with my engine overheating intermitently. The temp gauge spikes up, and sometimes goes right back down, sometimes stays up for a while, but it has never got into the red. Any ideas what could cause this? I also noticed my heater not working from time to time, although it does not seem to coincide with the overheating. Any help on what to check would be appreciated.

Is the coolant resevior low ?

yes, it was low. is that the problem or a symptom? i haven't noticed any white smoke, ect. it hasn't overheated since i filled it up a couple of days ago, but since it is an intermittent problem, i'm not convinced it is fixed.

Are you over filling it needs to be 1/2 inch or so below the min line

I filled it up to the min line. That was the first time I ever had to add coolant. i have ~150k miles. I am wondering why i lost coolant all of a sudden and where it went?
