Guys, I got a 1995 F150 XLT which I recently purchased.
I always felt the accelerator was a little slow to respond when moving off, but I now have done a long interstate trip and have discovered for no reason the vehicle will lose speed or when using the cruise control, the speed will just drop away and the auto transmission will need to drop out of O/D to regain the lost speed.
Is this a common problem with these trucks and what is needed to repair it???
I note that it does have a throttle cable set up.
It is driving me nuts and is a destroying my gas economy totally.
What size engine?
What MPG are you getting?
Are you talking about dropping out of OD on hills when using the Speed Control?
You do not have a "cruise control" as that is a GM thing and not a FORD item
The throttle cable set up you are talking about is that the cable from the Speed Control Module to the throttle plate shaft?.
It even drops out on the down hill and even on the flat.
The vehicle then loses speed and the tranny kicks down to catch up.
Call it what you like but I have a factory cruise control unit which has a 2nd cable to the throttle body from a driver unit situated on the inner drivers fender against the fire wall.
I am getting about 10mpg and I am expecting between 12 to 15 unloaded on highway cruising.
No problem about the terms Ford/GM just this is the 1st EFI style vehicle I have owned that has ever required any discussion in this area, so I can say I am very new to it.
I only know what the symptons are....
However if you define the terms you use, I am sure that I will pick up on them quickly.
PCM: Powertrain Control Module.
SPOUT: SPark OUTput, Desired spark timing information sent from the PCM to the ICM.
CM: Continuous Memory codes stored inside the PCM.
Thanks Bill, how did you know the color of my truck???? (joke - it is that burgundy color)
So given all that, where should I go from here or what kind of repairer should I be looking for since this is out of my league now we both suspect is computer/electronic stuff?
Russ.
PS: it was driving the I70 thru KS that this problem came to light in fact.
I would pull out the SPOUT jumper and check the timing with a timing light to 10* BTDC.
Tighten the distributor and recheck the timing.
If OK put the SPOUT back in and see if the timing moves to say like 20* BTDC.
Then run the self-test and post back here the results of the test and say if the codes are KOEO, CM or KOER. They have different meanings depending on what test they were from.
OK Bill, I will get my buddy to check the ICM colors 1st as I am working away right now.
I will email you the result direct if that is OK.
Might take a day to get back.
Thanks alot for your patience and knowledge for now.
Russ.
