Bout the last couple months i have had some weird steering. It started out like i was running on low tires , then it slowly went to a light pop if turned to the left , as I would drive after the pop it would want to stay left like an alighnment issue. I took it in a couple times and they could not replicate what was happening, it made me look like an a**. The pop got more frequent , took it in again , asked them to look at ball joint's , they were tight. Now I go to back in turn my wheel left light pop, rolling in idle turn right , won't turn, seems like I had to rev up to get even get it to function. Let it sit this week , go out now and I turn the wheels back and forth , fine . Put in drive start to turn and popped like I drove over a rock and now can't turn either direction. I'm such a ford faithful that a $600 truck has turned into a $8000 in 2 1/2 years, I still don't want to get rid of it. Any ideas?
My 92 F150 4x4 got really bad too. I bet its the front axle u-joints are bad. They have to move too when the front end turns. I ended up replacing my u-joints and ball joints last summer. Much better. You could try lubing them up really good and see if it helps.
Sounds like a front U-joint, but for the "pop" you're experiencing. I didn't have that, but the rest sounds similar. You might want to wade through my saga and see if this helps:
