I purchased a new spring kit for my brakes on my 1950 F1. The star adjuster spring is a different style than what was on the truck. When installed the spring does not make any contact with the star on the adjuster. Is it necessary for the spring to hit the star to keep it from moving on its own? If it is I quess I should reuse the old ones. My guess is the springs that came with the new kit are possibly for a newer truck or a car. The springs that came with the kit only have half the coils that the original springs have.
Thanks for your response. I reused the old star adjuster spring. (They looked to be in good condition, I cleaned them and gave them a shot of paint.) The brakes are all done now, next I will be running all new brake line. My F1 is currently a rolling chassis. Soon the brakes will be done, next will be installing the drive train. It is a slow but enjoyable process.
Good info. While you are on the subject is it possible for the spring to be too tight? I can't imagine getting the star to turn with the tension that is on it from the spring. I can hardly turn it now I can't imagine once i have the drum and backing plate on the spindle. Can this be right?
Once I had the brake assembly together (using the original star adjuster springs) I didn't have any trouble adusting the star adjuster. I put a screwdriver throught the slot in the backing plate and the star adjuster would move one click at a time.
The new spring you got in the kit may have been for self adjusting brakes and put in my mistake.
I guess the spring tension could be too tight. I would suggest two things: first take the adjuster off and make sure it turns freely - it could be tough to turn all by itself; and then make sure your shoes are on correctly - seated on all the way, and the spring holes in the new shoes are the same distance apart as on the old shoes. I'm not sure but I think the adjusters on one side might be reverse thread - not 100% sure. You didn't mix match them did you?
I dont think so but I will check. They turn freely enough without the spring and everything looks like it lines up. I got the kit from Dennis Carpenter so I think it would have the correct spring but I think your diagnosis may be correct.
