Controller an electronic device to allow a correct program of shift points for the transmission. An example would be the Baumann units for the earlier slush-boxes.
Missed the mark as in did not hit what they were aiming for...
Sure your driving a 6 sp??? I've yet to see one that didn't almost act like a cvt.......the 6 spd alone is what keeps making me think about trading my 07 in.......
What year is yours? How many miles? Have you taken it to the dealer and presented a specific issue? Had the TCM reflashed?
Mine works flawlessly. They not only hit the mark, they set the bar.
To answer your questions:
I know enough about the operation of "Adaptive Strategy" to not buy it, though that is another issue all together!
2010 Not mine.
Several thousand miles.
Thus far the dealers have been less then successful in curing the programming issues.

There are several brands... they are not marketed as trans programmers but as performance programmers that give the option of adjusting shift points... Which I don't reccommend as the shift strategy in the 6 speed (after it has adapted) is pretty darn good. XCT, superchips, Hypertech (and hopefully Edge soon) make programmers with "canned" tunes. There are others but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.
Tell me....what don't you "buy' about adaptive strategy.........
Go unplug your battery for a couple hours....then drive your truck......you'll see how much of a difference it really makes....
Based on real world experience.
What I don't buy is that the software is "adapting" to the use of the driver.
What I don't buy is the fact that Ford has to have a TSB and re-flash the code into the processor.
What I do not buy is that this on and obviously many others (TSB for no reason?) are/have had...
LOL! If I unplug my battery, and plug it back in on my truck... nothing will change, but then I drive a 1975 F250 Highboy with an 11.25:1 429 with a Carburetor in the nose and a cast iron cased transmission & T/C with Dana 60's and sitting on 35's, purty stock really... It gets better fuel mileage then the 2010 at any speed while towing the same load & at speeds the 2010 can only dream of going up any little hill... The 2010 is not "my" truck, and frankly not really a truck by comparison, more like a car with a big trunk. But hey it's a Ford, all I own is Fords! That is why I asked the question on this site, but then this site has changed a bunch since Ken and I would talk back in the list days...

Having owned a similar truck in the past, I must disagree... the new f-150 has a much stronger frame and is much more capable than the trucks of that era. While I love the looks and heavy duty axles, transfer case, and your choice in motors, it will never handle a trailer as well as these new trucks or be as reliable. I am not saying your old truck is a bad piece of machinery. I'm sure it is quite capable, as my old 77 was. Just don't hate the new stuff bucause they are more comfortable and a lot more urban types drive them nowadays... And most of the aftermarket tuners will void the warranty, and you cannot simply ininstall the programming and claim there was never anything aftermarket on the vehicle, as the Ford techs are pretty savy on looking into the computer and seeing what REALLY happened... Buyer beware.
Also, the adaptive shifting strategy is for real... Read any owner's manual or talk to any engineer. Disconnecting the battery actualy should not effect that strategy though... it is suppossed to store that in the ECM to negate it having to relearn how to shift everytime the battery dies (not that it happens often).
The only canned tuners out there (right now) are HyperCrap, Super$H1t, and Diablo. SCT's X3 will work, but it will need custom tunes (that may have changed in the last 2 weeks - haven't checked).
Contact 5Star (Mike Butler). They can write custom tunes for the 2010 using the X3.
The Diablo might be an option if you're looking for canned tunes ONLY.
Personally, if I'm going to spend the money, I want custom tunes...
And Stephen is right - disconnecting the battery WILL NOT erase the TCM learned strategy.

Bullydog has one out too... Saw it on ebay the other day...
