VIN Decode for possible purchase

Ok guys, I was driving down the road today and drove by junk yard...saw what I believe to be a '74 or '75 F100 SWB, 2WD..guy let me pull the vin and check it out...VIN F10GUT85255...here is the back story on the truck...guy took it in on scrap, was running, supposedly has a new crate transmission? Here is the kicker...guys says..."IT HAS A RARE ENGINE, IT HAS A 351 BOSS ENGINE"???? Wasn't able to verify as I am not 100% sure what the difference was in the BOSS engine. Supposedly it came out of a '71 F?? the "only" year they installed them??? He said he would sell it, if the right price came along. The body is in good condition. Very little rust, mainly surface rust, pretty straight, the glove box says Custom, but the rear panel says Explorer...could it be a pieced together truck? It has a short bed, both cab and bed are the same color red...didn't have a camera, but will try to make a stop tomorrow. would like some input...the engine had a "high rise aluminum intake", valve covers were aftermarket aluminum, but were 8 bolt, not sure of much more than that...was in somewhat of hurry, but wanted to stop in before he decided to crush it...said he would take $2,000 due to the engine alone, I know it needs a new ignition set up (Switch, key, etc), The transmission isn't the original, appears to have had a manual, (Still has the clutch pedal), Any help or advise...

Thanks

I beileve engine you are talking about is from a mustang...
1971 was the only year they had a Boss 351.

here a video of an original Boss 351 mustang...

Cool Video, I googled the 351 Boss, and came up with the Wikipedia article that the owner of the junk yard mentioned...just curious on the cost of an engine...from talking with him, it has been sitting in the yard for almost a year, so I am sure the engine would need some work, possible a rebuild...not sure what the lowest he would accept. He really wasn't in a "dealing" mood today, so I will go back later in the week, or first of next week. Would really like to pick up another Dentside, just not sure if I could spend that much on one.

I also got this from a mustang website...
"The 351 Cleveland and the Boss 351 are the same engine, Clevelands. The different is the Boss is more of a High performance engine. The Boss 351 uses the Boss 302 heads. They have bigger valves, valve springs and adjustable valve tran. The Boss also has 11:1 compression and uses a 750cfm 4-barrel carb. You could modify 351C four-barrel heads into 351 Boss heads by milling the rocker pedestal down and taping them for adjustable studs and guide plates. Plus the spring pocket diameter will need to be machined larger.

Hope this helps

Tony B."

So i guess it is a 351c with differant internals...
kinda like the 351m/400

so i dont think it should be worth much more than a 351c...
and since its been sitting i guess i would pay about the price of a decent 351c...

Cool, thanks; any idea on the price for it? Is it possible it could have the Boss engine? I will try to get some pics...any way to tell by visual inspection? Also it does have a 2bbl carb...and what could the deal be with the intake? Is there a high rise intake? And what would be the advantage/disadvantage of this set up?

The only way it would be a Boss 351 is if the engine was swapped at some time.

As for the high rise intake I have no clue

Another difference is the Boss 351 had 4 bolt mains on 2, 3, & 4. It also had a solid lifter cam and adjustable rocker arms.
These Mustangs (and engines) were rare in the day. I seriously doubt that the engine in that truck is a Boss 351. It's kinda like how 360's "magically" become 390's when they go up for sale.

this information is really good, I would definitely need a way to confirm the engine, this guy is dead set on it being a Boss engine...I would love to be able to pick up this truck, but would have to figure out the engine issue...

this guy is not a Ford guy, by his own admission, only took it in for scrap? His mechanic, supposedly claimed it as a 351 Boss...

Nice, the information is really great...is there any way to visibly tell a difference in the BOSS engine and a 351C?
