Ok, i have searched for hours and need some clarification please. i have a 94 f250 with a 460, while driving on the rear tank the front tank overflows. Took the truck to the dealer and they put on external check valves but that did not fix the problem. Had another mechanic look at it and they want to replace the fuel regulator. Everything i have found here suggest that the pump should be replaced. PLEASE HELP! What is the problem and why?
I had the same thing happen to me a few years back. I have a '96 w/302 and had to have the fuel pump changed out of the front tank. I was told the check valve in that pump was bad and it kept running all the fuel to the rear tank. If I filled up both tanks, the back one would overflow. After I changed the front pump, never had the issue again. Hope this helps.
This issue is very common. There was a recall at one time to fix the problem, but I do not recall the details of what was covered. The FDM has a check valve to prevent fuel flow from one tank to the other when the vehicle is equipped with dual tanks. I wonder why the external check valves did not work for you, other than being a band-aid fix at best.....
I asked the dealer about replacing the fuel pump, and of course was ensured that the fuel pump was not the problem. I am going to replace both fuel pumps and hope that solves the problem. If not, then take the truck the the mesa for a bbq!!
