Just to be clear unloaded my temps are ok cruising but if I get in the throttle good temps shoot up fast. While towing on flat ground temps are good but if I try to climb any grade temps climb very quick
What are the numbers we are looking at here...when getting into the throttle...and when going up an grade? How quick is quick?
unloaded at WOT i can go through 1st and 2nd gear and before I can get to 3rd I have to back out of throttle because I will be at 1250-1300. With my trailer on flat ground is ok but any grade temps will climb quick trying to maintain 60-65mph.
Two things, tow on 40 or 60 t for now. Get it live tuned next time he in the area. He can drop the egt's some at least 100 lower if all else is okay. In the hills at slow or back enforth speeds this can happen. In 40t or 60t it mit just be fine. 1100 is fine just don't go above 1250 for any time! Good luck let us know what works. Theres guys here that tow 40' toyhaulers and they see 1100 to 1200 pretty much.
He doesn't have a 40 or 60 tow. Live tuning will help but that's not the problem and it's exspencive to do. How fast are you towing in?is the engine lugging?what is the rpm? Could be in od and not enough engine speed for the turbo to lite. Any chiped truck will see high egt's if you get on it regaurd less if it's on a flat hill or not but it should come down once the turbo spools up. Is that what u are trying to tell us that if you floor it the egt's shoot to the roof? Does it come down in like 10 seconds or does it keep climbing?
Maybe I'm off here but 1200 degrees pulling a trailer (especially if it's a camper or enclosed trailer with a lot of drag), pulling up a grade in a hot 80T tune doesn't seem off to me. Maybe a tad high, but not outrageous from what I remember. After I was live tuned, things settled way down but it can still get up in that area whether I'm in OD or not. In OD it pulls fine and boost is up to 20+, and if I downshift well the temps only drop maybe a little because then at higher rpms it's dumping more fuel.
Live tuning would most likely clean all that up and get it more stable.
I also have to wonder if that WW has an affect on that, and you can also try going to a larger 1.0 exhaust housing to help.
The WW actualy helped all my surge is gone and temps dropped a little. If my temps are this high with this small of a trailer how could I tow anything heavier? I have also talked to Jody and says my truck should not be getting this hot with the 80T.
Yea, something is off for sure, you need to make sure there are no intake restrictions or exhaust restrictions or leaks of any type.
Have you or can you build a leak detector for your intake and make sure you're not leaking on your intake side?
I can pull this thing with my stupid SC while going up a pretty decent grade and pull 1200 sometimes hit 1300 but I have to work at it a bit.
It weighs in at 7.5K with trailer and all.
If you lived near by I'd come give you a hand.
Edit: Oh, and the stupid SC helps as my truck becomes a turd without it, LOL, one day I'll get jody's chip.
My 2002 barely sees 1000 pulling up a steep grade with a 8000lb car/trailer in tow tune and as soon as I let off the EGT's fall quick, normal for me is around 500-600 in 100hp tune.
Yes we checked for a boost leak yesterday and there were none. What about a CPS I have the grey one from the recall, could any of this be related to the CPS???
It's a possibility, the CPS could very slightly change your timings and it's easy to replace. Stick a black one in there and see what happens but I don't think it would change your temps that much
In regards to 1000* in tow with a car, that must be nice, wonder what I'm missing because on lvl ground I get 750-900* Maybe I have to small of a turbo but my exhaust is wide open, only have the MSRP muffler and it's straight piped.
In regards to your exhaust temps, I'm out of ideas. What is your boost maxing out at?
