I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I have a set of factory chrome nerf bars on my SD. With all the salt and crap on the road and the freezing temps here in the North I didn't get to wash my truck for two weeks. I noticed the nerfs look to be a little pitted and maybe rusting. Maybe it will polish out. Too cold to find out. Has anyone else experienced this pitting problem? A friend of mine with a new SD is also having this problem. My truck is only three months old.
then id say that some of the chrome is thin on the tubes. it is common fer it to start rustin over time, but 3 months is way to soon. id take it back to the dealer and see if they will replace it on a warranty.
That started happening to mine and it wipes off easily. The rust spots on mine seemed to be sitting on the surface and I easily wiped one off by brushing my finger over it. The important thing is not to let it stay dirty. Wash it and don't worry about it.
The Canadian winter has caused mine to rust, and it doesn't just wipe off either. I know these things rust, they all do, so I didn't really want them, I was going to try and find aluminum ones. My dealer guaranteed me they wouldn't. I had him put it in writing that the 3 year corrosion warranty applied to the nerf bars before I agreed to them. I fully intend to go down there right before my warranty expires and get a new set, and like a said before, I pity the service manager that tries to tell me no.
Watch the rear wheels also, even though they are aluminum. My pricy forged M/T Challengers ended up pitted as heck after one Colorado winter driving on the new Mag-Chloride junk. It is supposed to be both vehicle and environment friendly compared to straight salt, yeah right. I figured they were ok being dirty a few weeks at a time since it was aluminum, boy was I wrong. Spent about 2 hours per wheel re-polishing the pits out.
I always rinse off the road grime after every rain and snowstorm now. Just make sure you don't do it when it is freezing out or you'll end up in a moving igloo.
I have the Ford factory Chrome nerf bars on my 2001 F-250sd. With the amount of salt applied to the roads in New Hampshire and the desire to keep these bars chrome I replace the oval Chrome bars with a piece of 2x3 angle iron for the winter. I drilled holes in the angle iron to match the holes in the stock nerf bar brackets. With the bars painted flat black and a piece of adhesive anti slip tape applied to the top section of the new bar it makes a good step and a great place to kick all the slush etc. off my boots prior to gettin in. I also found some stock F-250 steel wheels in the bone yard(take-offs) and run dedicated snowtire/steel wheels during the winter thus saving the stock aluminum.
