i swapped a 302 from the 70's in to a 1994 bronco. it's all good as far as the engine is concerned but the trans will not shift right (shifts late and hard). can i hook up the ecu up to the motor some how for a rpm reference to the trans? would that work? or does is it all have to do with the tone ring?
The computer needs to know the engine speed, so you'll need to make that signal work. Installing the tone wheel and sensor from the original engine should work. Make sure the air gap is the same as it was on the original engine. That's critical.
Once you have that working you'll discover that the computer needs a throttle position signal, too. You might also have to install the temperature sensors, I'm not sure how the computer will feel about those signals not being there.
