I got a 06 250 SD, super cab, long bed, 5.4, 2WD.

I am looking at the toyo open country AT..LT285 70 R17 LR 10E

I do alot of highway driving with no load but I do tow alot around town and will have a very full load from time to time.

any thoughts?

I have run the Toyo Open County HT and really like it. It is not as aggressive as the AT, but for highway use it is really smooth and quiet. In the load range "E" it will carry about 3700 lbs per tire.

I had to go to a more aggressive tire on my Super Duty because I do a lot of loading horses in the pasture, but if you are mainly doing highway use I think you would be really happy with the HT.

HANKLIN:

Did you have issues with traction and tread pattern or was it a defect in the tire itself?

Only thought: The HT will provide longer life, especially with heavy loads and towing....

I've never heard any complaints about either the AT or HT - and I know of a LOT of people using them. The HT is outstanding on road, and does quite well on gravel roads and sand. The AT is better for real off roading (dirt, mud, etc). On snow, there are arguments galore. For ice, I have seen the HT do surprisingly well. I'd say better than AT. On thin, slushy snow on asphalt, they seem pretty close. For deep snow, the AT guys argue louder. But much of that just may be the old wives tale that more aggressive tread is better for snow.

The majority of folks who get the AT would probably be better off with HT, but many want the aggressive look of the AT.

The Toyo AT is an excellent all around tire. If you do mostly highway driving and rarely go offroad or run in snow/ice, then the HT would be the way to go.

I didnt feel secure rolling down the freeway during rain with those big lugs and they totally stink in the snow. But I`m talking m/t,,not a/t.

I have 315/75/16 Toyo ATs on my truck now, siped, they are excellent in snow and ice. I don't see the need for the MT, I don't offroad a lot. The AT does better on ice, and I can put chains on when needed in deep snow.

curious, did you have them siped from the get go or did you wait? I was told not to on the m/t`s as chunks possibly could come off

I've run the A/T's with siping, and they are very, very good on ice and snow. I haven't experienced much chunking. They are a much softer compound than typical M/T so it works better.

As you've discovered, M/T's are terrible for wet or icy conditions and marginal at best on dry pavement. Awesome for mud and rocks, pretty bad anywhere else.

In more ways than one, they are like football cleats. Superb for what they're intended, but rather single purpose.
A/T's are your knobby treaded cross trainers. Pretty good everywhere.
H/T's are your walking shoes. Last forever on the pavement.
And Severe Service/Winter tires are your crampon equipped hiking boots.
