Check Engine
hi...i bought a used 1997 f150 standard shift with 96500 on it...
i have the following problems.
1. the hood does not close fully
2. the check engine lamp is on
3. the gear shift vibrates.
- i am new to trucks...can you please let me know how to fix these problems..

You asked:
1. the hood does not close fully
You need to determine if anything is obstructing the hood and clear it. If that does not appear to be the problem you may need to make adjustments at the latch or hinges as required. If the fenders and/or other parts are bent you may be out of luck until the bent parts are replaced.
2. the check engine lamp is on
Take the truck to a parts store to have the codes read from the computer. Most parts stores will provide this service for free. Just buy the parts to correct the problem from them, -It is only fair.
While you are at the parts store buy a repair manual for your truck. If you have some mechanical experience get a Chilton's. If you are a novice get a Haynes. An OEM manual can be a good addition to your library. I am an experienced mechanic and I try to get all three for each of my vehicles.

Probably caused by whatever is causing the check engine light. When you get the engine running smooth it may solve the problem.
