I recently ran into this situation and took the Ex into a stereo shop, they couldn't get it out either! I have a cousin who works on custom stereos and said that the left clip was bent to far out (away from radio).
The dash still had the two screws in it and couldn't even pull dash out any, the only option we came up with was snapping the left clip off! We took a narrow screw driver and was able to wedge it between the radio and dash panel, with a flashlight, found the bent clip and pushed (towards dash) on it snapping it off. I didn't want to snap the clip off, but was going to install a aftermarket later on.
I drove with it that way for about a month before I replace with the aftermarket dvd and didn't have any problems with it vibrating or moving around in the dash. It still fit snug!
Thought I would share my experience, even if it might not of been the proper way. The stereo shop said that was probably the only option with the screws still in the cover.
Well, I picked up the Ford removal tool and it did not help. So we pulled the dash cover off as far as we could with screws still in above the stereo and was able to peek under the edge from the right side and push a long screwdriver through and depress the tab on the right side. With some finagiling (spelling?) we were able to pop it out finally.
I removed the 2 top screws and think I will not replace them since the clips will hold the dash cover in anyhow, if this happens again, at least we will be able to get to it easier.
