Bad IP?

Took the truck up to rodeo this weekend, bout a 80 mile drive with a 5 mile 6% grade. I have been questioning my IP as sometimes it just doesnt "seem" right. Well anyhow, after i pulled the grade i had a faint knock. Sounded just like our 6.0 when we lost an injector but quieter. Since then, no smoke whatsoever under load, but if you let off and kinda coast the engine so that its not accelerating or decelerating my truck turns into a fogger... im talkin bad. Also it "misses" now, and im kinda clueless as to how, its not a specific cylinder or anything. When you rev it up to about 1500rpms and just hold it there it pops and stutters and sounds terrible, and again tons of smoke. Truck starts great still has good power, and seemingly is still getting pretty good mileage. When driving around town (slow speeds) i have to usually use 4th and almost lug it so it doesnt surge and do the miss/stutter.
Any help or advise at this point would be great.
Mike

If it is missing at an idle, crack open one injector line at a time while it's running and you can figure out which one it is, or, another thing is try feeling the lines after a drive, if an injector isn't opening at all it will be warmer since the fuel isn't getting through it the same as the others.

I can check into it, but like i said, its not just missing on one or two cylinders... it just acts like its runnin like crap but only when free revving. Its fine at idle and under load. Honestly, what it kinda sounds / acts like is its hitting the governor at like 1600 rpms at free rev... which its never done before.

Well some interesting news. I need to add a few things tho. When i first put the engine in, at high rpms about 2800+ the truck would run really rough, not rev any higher and smoke really bad, i assumed that this was the governor and just how they were. Then later, like in the above post, this was getting worse, to the point that if you free revved at any rpm over about 1200 it would run Terrible, missing and popping and smoking, but fine under load. Now, after about 150 mile of 60% diesel 40% waste motor oil, it no longer misses, pops, smokes AT ALL! From idle, mat the throttle, and vrrmm right to the governor at 3300 and is smooth as can be, also, the engine runs smoother, has more power, especially down low, and believe it or not, smokes LESS. I dont have a pyro, but i have noticed my stacks are a little warmer than they used to be after normal driving. Also, my exaust is quieter.
To me this is great, i get some free oil decide to use it for free fuel and end up fixing whatever it was that was wrong with it, at least for now.

sounds like you may have cleaned something out; I'd keep a close eye on it for a while though, and perhaps add a known good IP to your spares box if your the type what carries one

No idea, but odomoter said 26k, so 126 or 226... judging by the drivers seat, transmission and the truck in general im inclined to assume the engine has 226k on it. well 229 now i guess. I noticed the truck had a new radiator, new batteries fairly new GP's and the right cylinder head has been off or replaced.

well im not going to tell ya to spend hundreds of dollars.but if this helps;
when my odo turns 100k a new ip and a set of injectors are going in regardless of power/fuel mileage at the time.i want her to run just like she does right now all the time until she hits 200k when i'll do it again.
i haul some serious loads,and i dont "need" a turbo.id like to have one latter on after more mods etc.but it's not needed.
fresh ip/injectors are a must.the difference after people claiming to change them is very drastic (when long overdue.)

I dont doubt it needs the IP/ injectors changed, but this engines purpose in life is to keep my truck on the road while my super duper 6.9 is built. So if it aint broke dont fix it lol... Speaking of fixes. I think i caught the problem with my truck. Was cruisin the road, nice level ground 55mph and it was getting warm... thought that was wierd.. hit a stop sign.. well hey seems louder than usual... pulled hard through second and at about 3k it start poppin and stuttering... I got home and free revved, doin its missing popping crap again... got out pulled the wire off the IP for timing advance and vualla, popping smoking missing at high rpms fixed... apparenntly it seems to stick.. least thats my culprit for now, more investigating to come.

Oh, i also turned the pump up 1 flat today, it "seems" like it has more power but that could be wishful thinking. It does make a little smoke when i bury the fun pedal now.
