egr cooler replaced under warranty at 115,000 kms, now 6months later same symptoms, no heat at idle, white smoke from tailpipe. I have read tsb 090803 and it says to service the engine oil cooler, my dealer did not perform this part of the repair when the egr cooler was done, truck is out of warranty now (2005 with 124,000kms now), but I suspect the egr cooler has failed again because the oil cooler was not serviced. Is the oil cooler a "must" repair for this procedure because the dealer is telling me just because the tsb says to do it, it may not be a necessary repair. I'm obviously trying to build a case to get ford to do this repair properly under warranty. Can anybody give me insight as to what to do and/or are there in fact steps to omit or skip during this repair.
I had mine done (EGR Cooler) replaced a couple months ago, and yes whenever the EGR cooler is replaced, the oil cooler is either replaced or rebuilt kit is used. That is my understanding and I have spoken to quite a few diesel techs. The reason for this is because when the EGR goes, it's because the oil cooler was plugged or restricted the flow of coolant to the EGR cooler. Go back to the dealer and tell him that is what the TSB is for. To properly diagnose and repair the problem without guessing and costing FoMoCo, more money on warranty claims down the road.
That my take on this but wait for the better informed and some diesel techs to chime in.
As stated above, they are always to be done together. Oil cooler plugs, then causes EGR cooler to go. I hope it don't cost you any $$$. Dealer knows better...
what you will need to do is varify the repair date vs the date on 090803 if the repair was done after the the tsb came out then the tsb was done incorrectly. also varifiy that the repair order parts list has vc-9. so if there is no oil cooler kit and or no vc9 on charged to ford and the repair date is on or after the tsb start date then you should call 1800-392-3673 (ford us customer service)
Thanks Cheezit, I really didnt think cutting corners on a tsb would be a good way to proceed.
This is a big industry problem and is caused by a few things.
1) we get paid by the job not the hour
2) pay times for many jobs just suck.
3) lazy *** people.
For sure sympathize with industry warranty times versus how long it takes cheezit, but the diesel guys at the dealer here rule, they get paid straight time plus a buck premium for diesel no matter what the book time is. Now the dealer is telling me that tsb does not have a mandatory replacement for the oil cooler, it is at their discretion, guess I will try my luck with customer service.
4 c). Submerge the EGR cooler horizontally in the water, with the coolant ports pointing upward. Manipulate the cooler under water to purge all trapped air from the internal coolant passages. (Figure 3)
4 d). Inspect for continuous bubbles escaping from the coolant ports. (1) If continuous bubbles identify a leak, replace the EGR cooler and service
