I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find it in my subscribed threads, and it occurs to me that a new one may have come out since then, anyway.
Can anyone recommend a code reader that COUNTS THE FLASHES for you, and just gives you the codes numerically?
Also, I understand that some of the more expensive diagnostic tools also have a "Flight Recorder" function, i.e., they will capture and display real-time data, while driving. Do any of the more affordable "code readers" also have this function?
I may upgrade to the '97-2003 era of trucks. Will a reader that works on "our" era of trucks also do these? Will the same reader do both OBDI and OBDII vehicles?
Also, prices and suggestions re: where to buy would be much appreciated.
+1 on the 3145. It is OBD1 only but it's not very expensive and it saves a lot of time over counting blinks. I have a ScanGaugeII for my '96. It's a lot cheaper than the professional scanners but it can still do some of the same functions like pull live data and also the stored sensor data when a code comes up.
sorry bout this........could your engine still throw a code that you could pull if the check engine light is not on. The answer to this will settle an argument I'm havin with the lady. thanks.

yes. when the PIP sensor on my 95 died, there was no check engine light, but the code was in the computer,so it is possible.
I have this one and it works as good as a code reader can work with OBD I. The OBD I system isnt very strong in the diagnostic area to begin with, so not much can be expected.
