Ive got an 86 f250 HD 4x4 with the 6.9 diesel. I only got to drive it halfway home before the forward cluches in the transmission took a $#!+ Anyway I wasnt too torn up over it.. Swaped in a new c6 in my dorm parkin lot and since then I havnt been able to get it started... its a basket case and im not quite ready to give up on it. But I was wondering about down the road maybe swapping in a different drivetrain cause the chassis and running gear and the body is great. I thought about a 12 valve but its been done soo many times. I dont know much about them but what about a 6v53 detroit? would thee be any way to put an automatic and a transfer case behind one without too much aggrivation cause ive only seen detroits in 2wd's. I dont know too much about them (the detroits) but I use them everyday and am extreemly impressed with em' (i work on aircraft and most of our AGE is powered by em'). Just rollin it around in my head im really not too serious about it, sorry if Ive wasted ur time. I tend to ramble on but please let me know what yall think.
The starting problem with the 6.9 is likely fuel and or glow plug related. There is nothing wrong with a 6.9. Pull the fuel filter and if it's not full, you have an air leak somewhere. Usual culprit is the injector return lines.
Glow plugs are another issue. If they are not working right the engine is going to be real hard to start.
Appreciate the help...thats not quite the problem tho... I aready posted it on the idi forum. I was just thinkin about stuff id like to do someday hen i have he tools, mone and
The 6V53 is huge, and heavy for a pickup. It's around 2000 pounds by itself. You can couple em up to an Allison auto, then use a Deuce & a half transfer case. There's other engines you can use that'll fit better. A Ford 6.6, International DT360, Perkins 6.354, or a Detroit 4-53T.
