Thinking about a programmer

I'm thinking about adding a programmer to my truck. I've got an '05 dually CC.

Motor has about 12,000 miles on it, and I'd like a bit more power, and the economy boost when I want it.

I have the ability to be a lightly used Edge with Attitude. $200. Not overly sold on it, looking for opinions on what people think. I know the ultimate it a custom tune, but for $200 I will get what I am looking for I think...

There are a couple of issues with your prospective purchase. You will not find much support here for the Edge tuner. There are many reports of engine and transmission issues when using the shift on the fly devices. As to fuel mileage increases using any tuner it is a crap shoot. There are too many driving style and conditions variables to accurately predict any mpg improvements. I have a SCT X3 with custom Innovative Diesel tunes and am very happy with it. My mpg are slightly lower than stock but the improvement in performance is worth it. YMMV

Regards

Can I ask what you spent on the SCT?

Trying to be cheap on the front end can get you into trouble at times. This is one of those times were you run a higher then normal chance of that happening. Would a 3k tranny repair bill be what you are looking for with that 200 edge purchase? You run a statistically higher then average chance of that happening due to the mutual exclusive nature of shift on the fly and properly tuning our trucks. You can't have both.

If your going to do it, do it right.

FYI, I know tuner companies tend to hock it with a mind toward economy, they really are performance enhancers first and foremost. If you see economy...great. It's icing on the cake, but don't get it with a mind towards economy. You may not end up liking your purchase.

So what about going with an SCT Livewire? It comes preloaded with some tunes, and can have three custom tunes made. It also incorporates all the gauges too, so it actually saves a bit of money, and is safer and more capable...

I would actually suggest the Edge Insight(which is gauges only) and an SCT X3 for the custom tunes.

Reason why not the LiveWire, because they have issues with screens freezing, powering down and staying down. To my knowledge, SCT has not come up with a total fix for the issue. I will add that it seems to be hit or miss on rather you'll have the issue. You may luck out and get one that doesn't have an issue and then you'll be ahead of the game.

It's just something that should be mentioned. If you get one that doesn't have that issue, then I think you would be happy with it. Those that don't have the issue really do like the LiveWire, those that have that issue don't tend to have the LiveWire any more.

I can imagine they wouldn't. I was thinking the Insight before anyway, so maybe that's the route I'd go...

I'll have to do some thinking I guess!

Thanks for the help.

Just make sure you get the pyro probe for the Insight so you can monitor EGTs as well.

The next one is a gauge that I highly recommend and that is the Fuel PSI gauge. Fuel PSI cannot be had thru the OBDII port, so you have to get it with a seperate gauge if you get the Insight. It's just something that I would highly suggest. Just think about that one as well.

I was planning on that one already. I was gonna do the port converter one that runs over to the fender, then converts to the electric gauge.

Tex has posted my truck specs exactly. I have an Edge Insight with egt probe, an ISSPRO EV 2 fuel pressure gauge and a SCT tuner. Very pleased so far.

Well I ordered the Insight w/egt probe today. The tuner will be next. Then most likely ARP studs and new gaskets! LOL
