Edge Evolution Programmer - Thoughts?

So some of you are aware that I just got a new CC. The PO (and I think the PO before him - he only had it a few months) had an Edge Evolution programmer with the truck, which he gave to me when I bought it. I asked him how much he used it, and he said that he only used it to put it in "Tow" mode for towing a gooseneck, and that was all. I decided to check it out today, and noticed that it was still in the "Tow" mode. I put it back in "Stock." It did start, which I've read has been a problem before, but I haven't driven it yet.

So my questions are:

What are some general opinions of this programmer? Bill told me he's heard that they fry the PCM's in the OBS trucks. Is this true?

Should I use the programmer at all, or scrap it?

Is my PCM in trouble, if what's Bill has heard is true about these programmers, even if I put it back in "Stock" mode?

Any other advice about using these programmers?

Thanks in advance.

Bill, set that kid straight and tell him to listen to you!

Seriouly Tyler, I've been on here for a long time and I've never heard anything good about them. Sell it and get a chip.

Glenn - allow me to clarify - this wasn't about "Not listening to Bill." He told me to get on here and ask because he wasn't entirely sure. So in my defense, I'm not "undermining" Bill's opinion.

Secondly - thanks for the advice. As far as the Edge programmer is concerned - consider it gone. There's enough negative opinions of it to satisfy me.

Yeah, ditch the Edge and get a chip with some good custom tunes on it. Or you can keep that Edge and use it to pull and read codes.

That's the other thing I was gonna ask - Would it be ok to use it for diagnostics/pulling codes? If so, I'll keep it for that.

I have only run my edge for 140,000 miles (with no problems). so possibly I haven't had it long enough to see the bad in it. I leave it set on 60hp and have not plugged it in since installing it.

The biggest issues with the Edge programmers seem to come from people who change tunes frequently. The issue is that the "programmer" is exactly that. It reprograms the PCM whenever you switch tunes. So if anything happens in the process of that reprogramming, it corrupts the data on the PCM and then you have a PCM that wont work and often won't even link up with the programmer to return it to stock. The tunes are okay (from what I hear you could compare them to stock "canned" tunes on a TS 6 position chip) but there is no comparison between these tunes and a good custom tune from someone who knows what they need to do to make these trucks run.

I'm not out to badmouth the Edge stuff, but there are better alternatives for tunes and better ways to accomplish the tuning than reprogramming the PCM. These Edge issues are not limited to our trucks either. I had a '99 F-150 before this and there were a lot of guys that had the Edge Evolution on their trucks and bricked their PCMs. Best case scenario, they took it to the dealer and had the PCM re-flashed to stock, but some of them couldn't even do that and had to buy a new PCM.

If you're happy with the tunes you have in there from your Edge, that's great. Leave them in there, don't mess with it and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Again, it seems that there is no problem with the tunes themselves (except that you can get better tuning) it is just when people are changing tunes that they seem to have issues.
