Battery Light

I have a 98 F150 4.2 5sp and when the engine is running at higher RPMs like when taking off or passing on the highway the battery light starts flickering but doesn't stay on solid and the voltage needle begins to jump around. It also does this while sitting still and reving engine.

Any ideas as to what may be worng?

Most likely due for a new alternator.
Reason: the Brushes are worn and the surface is uneven. Results in the Brushes can't keep solid contact at elevated RPM.
