Hi all, I'm hoping someone in FTE land can offer me some sound advise regarding the purchase of my first Excursion. Currently I'm negotiating with a dealer for a '05 Ex diesel Eddie w/91k. The Ford dealership is asking 25k and have declined my offer for 24k out the door. Other than excessive leather armrest wear and a bit of surface rust on the rear bumper, it's in great condition. Is 25k a far price or should I stick to my 24k offer? Also, regarding extended warranties; I would love to have at least a 3 year extended warranty but there is so MANY to choose from. Is there one out there better suited for the Ex? Thank you kindly in advance for you help.....Graham

Stop and step back and first of all get an OASIS report on that Excursion before you pay top dollar from some dealer!! Once you know whether or not it has a clean repair history from Ford then you can determine a fair price! Carfax reports don't touch the mechanicals of the vehicles. That Excursion could be on it's 2nd engine and 2nd trans and had electrical gremlins, EGR, turbo, injector problems, nuisance oil leaks etc......... Your best to do your due diligence before you purchase a 6.0 diesel anything!
Once you find a good Excursion to purchase I would buy an ESP warranty for it if it's a 6.0 Diesel!!
$25 or even $24,000 is a lot of money for an 05 diesel with 91000 on it. I'd shop around. And it should have free dealer coverage on the drivetrain to 100,000K.
Like scottman said, a Ford ESP is all that you should consider. You can talk to your dealer to find out if the vehicle is still eligible and what kind of protection and price they will offer.
I don't believe that any of the ESP's will go beyond 7 years from the in service date, so you're looking at short term protection. Regardless, major repairs are expensive.
See what they say about an ESP and you can shop around. I believe once you hit 100K miles, the ESP option is gone.

Graham I would not consider that an over price for the Eddie Bauer with 91K if it is in good condition and like the others said has not had a bunch of engine, trans, work. I would ask the dealer to provide a history on it to make sure it is up to snuff and not one of the Katrina flood vehicles floating around out there. If all matches to your liking I would jump on it as excursions especially good ones are getting harder and harder to find. As far as warranties there is the ford extended warranty the dealer can add if possible, then you have several other kinds you can buy out there. I bought mine a year ago and paid 24,800 with 73,000 miles, The change in mine was the previous owner had the computer wiped and a new program installed within parameters which has made my vehicle run better. I would have got it for 22 but there was 2 people from up north biding against me. I got the extended warranty from an outside company and have not regretted it as I had a gas tank sensor go out a couple of months ago and they paid 100% of costs to the tune of $400.00.
I wouldn't pay anywhere near 25K for a 5 year old vehicle with nearly 100k miles, even if it is an Excursion. You could buy a way newer Diesel truck with half the miles for that price!! KBB in excellent condition is around the 20K mark, anyway I think they are robbing you for that price!!
I've been searching for an 2005 Excursion 6.8L for the past few months. My research indicates that pricing is all over the board... as low as $10K to 30K depending on the condition, mileage, and of course the greed of the seller. I highly recommend searching Craigslist for the best deals. I have found several great deals but I'm just not financially ready to pull the trigger (I have two vehicles that I need to sell first). Try this Craiglook link below. You can search up to 250 miles from your zip code.
My 01 4x4 with v10 and 110k miles was 7k a few months ago. I really wanted a diesel, but that price bought me a lot of gasoline! There are some 04 and 05's that I saw in the 12k range with 80-100k miles on them.
Not trying to talk you out of the diesel, I have a powerstroke and love it - but it's an expensive engine to own, and if you are paying so much for it it really doesn't pencil out.
I would not buy a 6.0 diesel period. No one has mentioned headbolt studs, but I would advise you to check out the 6.0 before you buy one. My neighbor purchased a 6.0 F-350 about 2 years ago after spending 3500.00 on the engine and ball joints it still looks new and runs good now! If the engine is bone stock from the factory, its a nightmare waiting to happen with 91000 miles on it. Just the nature of the beast. Just look throught the posts on this site and LOOK at the mods for the 6.0. Me I'll stay with the V-10, the one that takes a licken and keeps a kicken. Just my 2 pennies..........
Good point urbanx, head studs is key for the 6.0. Remember that the X is the king of the highways and that if cash is tight, maybe you should really think long about the PSD. I had no clue about the 6.0 besides that I wanted the 2005 and loved the sound of a diesel. I found FTE about a week after my purchase and got alittle worried if I maked the right decision. But after countless hours on here and reading all the posts, I have a better understanding of the 6.0. I took a 9hr trip with my girlfriend and her parents to pick it up with only seeing one picture of it and speaking to the salesman acouple of times on the phone mostly about the price. Which I talked him down 3Gs and I only took the parents because we stopped in NY for them to see their son. My point..I felt good about my decision, thought I had done all the RESEARCH that I could and spend more money on it to keep it on the road. Hope my story helps and good luck.
