I recently put our Lance camper on the truck for a short vacation. As part of the pre-trip prep I pulled the battery from the camper to check the fluid. When I reinstalled the battery I crossed the leads. This is not my normal proceedure as I've been doing this for fifteen years. I discovered my error in a few minutes but that was enough time to pop something in the charging circuit as the truck no longer charges the camper. The camper will charge with shore power and everything else seems fine. I tried following the wiring back to the engine compartment but got lost in the maze of wires coming out of the bundle. I do have continuity from the plug to where I spiced into the wires that run to the factory plug below the bumper. Does anyone know of a component I can reset or check under the hood. My current thought is to abandon the factory wire and run a new charging circuit with an isolator to the splice area like I did on my old '86 F250. I've long since forgotten just how I did that so any suggestions in this regard will also be appreciated.
Thanks David. The fuse (#24 inside panel) is fine. Relays 38 and 39 I assume are in the seperate box next to the main box under the hood. (The 4x4 transfer is manual so I do not have relays 40 & 41.) I switched the two relays as they are the same and I know the backup lights worked on the camper. Still no juice to the plug. I'm actually checking for charge at the plug by the hitch where I know I have continuity from the splice. It's hard to get to the camper plug due to the tool box that is always on the truck.
Check the voltage on the fuse first and than on the prong at the hitch.
Logically the fuse suppose to blow, but practically it might happen that bad connection cut off before fuse blow. If you have the power at the fuse and and not at the prong -the wire is having bad connection somewhere between. I would suspect the hitch plug connectors the most.
I should have read further in the manual. There is a second fuse for the charging circuit, a large 30A in the box under the hood. This one is blown so hopefully a new fuse will solve the problem. Thanks for the replies. The new 30A fuse fixed the issue. All is well.
