Question oxygen/acetylene torch question.....

...having a bit a an "issue' with my little O/A set-up...actually it usues
MAPP gas and for the life of me I cannot get this thig to run out!!!!!

So I'm cuttin', bendin' & modifyin' just about everything I find layin' around
to use up what is left and this old set-up is just tired...
.

I'm not sure if there is a problem in the mixing area of the handle or
what....hoses seem fine....even took stuff up to Bakers Welding Supply
here by my house to have them just give it them quick eye-ball and they
said everything "looked" OK...just use up the MAPP and come in to pick
out a new type of gas and tip and should be all set....

I guess MAPP needs a special tip....go figure.......

So I finished fighting with this issue.....

I got one off Ebay a couple years ago, unopened, for $45.. is a steal at your price too.

works great.. I use a plasma cutter for any real cutting, but the different tips come in handy.

I bought my set of e-bay and they work fine. As I recall they were not terrifically expensive. All the "welding" work I do is oxy acet, and mine work fine. Question: when yo upicked up yor tanks why did you get MAPP gas? That's for plumbing and copper soldering or heating vinyl flooring. MAPP is "dirty" so it's not good for steel. Also, MAPP is a different density than Acetyline and your valves and regulators will not work right with it.

I'd just take the tank back half full and tell them to get you the same size in acetyline! - What, $35?

Talking No more MAPP.....

Julie.....agreed....MAPP uses separate regulators & tips...go figure...

The tip on my Airco torch does have MAPP stamped in to it....

However....I picked this little set up from a kool ol' retired dude near my
home that was getting rid of it 'cause he no longer had any use for it...

His name was Wolfgang....man this cat was a real character...

From what I've been told....nobody is refilling MAPP cylinders at welding supply shops....so it's time for a switch...

The entire rig takes up minimal space in the garage so that is why I like it!

I think I flipped him around $100.00-$125.00 and the tanks were full...

The gauges are really kinda sad....should be replaced.....

I still have plenty of Oxygen left....nice size tank too....I have an additional tank-cap also for a standard tank so I think I am gonna look
in to another tank the same size....extra cap seems to always be in the way...

Last time I inquired about fuel gas.....there were a couple of options
"other" than Acetylene.....some funky mixes I'm not familiar with.....

This is all I could find from my local supplier web site...

Overview of Torch Cutting - Welding Resources - Weld My World

I'm gonna stop in this week....I want to do a search for a little info on this Airco welding torch handle first....no reason spending money I need to spend...

Biggest problem with the Chinese clone torches and regulators is when they need parts. "Victor like..., Harris design.." doesn't mean genuine Victor or Harris parts (tips etc) will fit and not leak, just who's design they generally copied. fit and finish depends a great deal on if they were made in a modern factory on modern tools or whittled out with a file and hand drill from recast WW2 shell casings. Also the regulators may or may not read accurately, are probably single stage and unlikely to have flame arrestors built in. All ways to make cheaper. Don't bother trying to get them worked on the welding supply will just laugh and tell you to throw them away.
Mapp gas and Ac tanks take different regulator fittings AFAIK. There are a lot of the CC sets on ebay you have to read the description real carefully. My local Sam's club has a genuine MIA name brand torch set for <150.00.

Talking Smith - 30 Series Regulator Twin Pack - Oxygen and LP Acetylene (CGA 510)

Well.....my torch....OLD Airco handle & torch head...now seems to be
working fine...well...I did clean the heck out of it...

I did not go the H.F. route as all the hose I have is just fine & I have
somewhere around a dozen sparkers....goggles up the whaZoo....

Sooo....I was getting tired of being disappointed by ALL of these
LOOSERS on craigslist whom had listed oxy/acetylene regulators, torches,
tanks, etc... for sale....yet would NOT answer their phones OR return
emails!!!! Even when I assured them I had CASH-in-hand......

Then just for giggles...I looked on my local welding supplier website to
check for any 'specials" and found this...Sale Price: $139.99

http://www.bakersgas.com/SMIHTP2.html

.......part of the issues were with the regulating of gas....and even
more with the stupid MAPP tank "almost" on empty....but I did not know
this as that tank only had a single gauge......

NOW....I know exactly how much gas is IN the tank as well as having
much greater control over supply of fuel-gas as well as o2....

AND...I do not have another plastic BOX to store "somewhere".......

BUT....craigslist DID get me these 2 tanks for $40.00 TOTAL....and they are full!

...that alternator is just for reference (size-wise)....

I KNEW I was gonna get along well with this dude as SOON as I pulled in
his driveway....

I nosed the F150 right up to a '74 Shovelhead FLH just as he finished
settin' the valve-lash...he said he scored these tanks at an estate auction
up in Flint & had no use for them.

However...in his garage sat a few "new" finds from said auction...

A metal lathe that has to be as old as I am, a Bridgeport, a Cincinatti
verticle mill, a real nice collection of equipment......

JUST as my new Bro & I are about to part ways....he asks me if I need a
cabinet for my garage, and...I can have it for free as he now has NO room any longer with all these new toys...

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k2...andMORE_03.jpg

NOW............

As we wheel this thing around to the back of the truck I start to notice
that it is a little "heavy' and he says..."I'll let ya have all the tools in the cabinet too just for takin' this dumb thing off my hands"......

...FREEBIES!............ full-on neighborhood semi-annual garage sale commimg up in a few weeks.....
