I installed some Gibson headers today and they have 2 1/2" collectors to bolt up to my y-pipe. Every muffler shop I go to tells me I have a 2 1/4" y-pipe. Result: have to get a new y-pipe made. But the Gibsons are supposed to bolt up to my stock exhaust, and every header out there seems to be made for 2 1/2. Is my pipe stock 2 1/2? Or are the headers incorrectly made?

bueller here , hehe. its possible that it had been changed on your rig at one time. but I did mention that i had to get my collectors redone to fit up to my headers as well. If thats all that needs to be done to your exhaust I say just do it. I know the cost couldnt be to bad and it will help it flow better. You dont want a bottle neck at that point thats for sure. What are they wanting to charge you for upgrading your Y pipe??

stock pipe is 2 1/4. all of those aftermarket headers that are supposed to bolt up are 2 1/2. result: they leak. so i asked summit about it and the guy straight-tone replied "well, they do bolt up dont they?" those sneaky guys.

i paid 154.95 and got a new custom "high-flow" y pipe made. problem solved.

im just glad to be done with it.

i'm a super big fan of gibson now.

for one thing, installing those gibsons was a snap compared to those crummy pace-setters. i thought i was just not buying chrome - instead, i got no quality, either. i had to grind down 9 of the 16 bolts and spend over 4 hours of frustration to get the pace setters on. the gibsons went on first try like a dream. only had to grind the lip off of one bolt on the gibsons. for that matter, i couldn't even get one of the bolts in on the pace setters (#7 on the drivers side). the gibsons tell you to use a silicon gasket seal while the pace setters completely leave that out. and i wondered why they were leaking. gibson bolts are put further away from the exhaust tube so you can actually torque them properly - imagine that! the gaskets that the gibsons come with are obviously thicker and higher quality. and you can actually take the spark plugs out using a socket wrench without worrying about space on the gibsons.

am i happy with them? heck yeah!! i've noticed a huge throttle increase even over the old headers! more power in general.

im convinced. from now on i buy gibson. the extra 150 is well spent. plus, the chrome looks purty.

righton, thats great. i was looking in my summit magazine and the picture they show for the gibsons for our application is the same design the flowtechs are that i got. But of course they arent as pretty as yours or got the extra goodies. Regardless i think this has been a real good mod , more frustrating then expensive but well worth the time. Cant wait to get some serious miles on this baby. The drop in k&n is ordered and in the mail. That will be a nice add to as well.

later, and i know i still owe you a buck. hehe

For anyone who has not already purchased a set of shortie headers, give Hedman a shot! I bought a set of flowtechs and couldnt get them to seal at the collector. After frustration, goop and frantic welding i sent them back and ordered a set of shorties from Hedman. They sealed with no trouble at all, even with the mild damage to the ends of the Y-pipe (frantic welding). The difference was in the collector end of the header, the flowtechs were semi-circular while the hedmans were tapered and drew the Y-pipe into the porper position as it was tightened down.

JBA is also another great brand. They are expensive but bolt right up and are a quality product

jba will be my next set of headers for sure. I figure for my first set that the flowtechs were a decent purchase. I agree they didnt bolt up to the collector very well at all. but the muffler shop fixed that and now they seal up really well. Hopefully this is the last time I have to get the y collectors resized. Regardless i think this is a great upgrade with noticable gains.
