Irregardless, that is how much the engine produces. How much of it is useable is a different issue alltogether. An EFI 4.9 probobly has a gross closer to 200.
NET horsepower ratings in my mind are illogical as they should be strictly representitive of that vehicle only. To truly have a net rating each individual vehicle needs to be placed on a chassis dyno in order to account for the various gear ratios, options, trannies, and quirks of said vehicle. The engine itself should theoreticly vary less than 5% in its output. A vehicles net can vary up to 30% depending on what accesories are added. An auto trany alone can consume up to 20HP. A air conditioner 15. Smog pump 3. So on and so forth.
Very true, and I agree it would be better knowing what the engine puts out, instead of what it does in the vehicle. However, in cases like this, I find it better to stay with consistency for the sake of comparison.
If 95% of people are telling me their V8s punch out 200hp net, and I tell them my I6 makes 250hp gross with a 4bbl upgrade, etc., it may be true, but it doesn't get us anywhere since there's no basis for comparison. Kinda like saying my truck weighs 4000 and yours weighs 1814 when I'm talking pounds and you're talking kilograms, when indeed the weight is exactly the same.
Always have to remind my Dad that when discussing his older 50's engines. He's constantly reminding me that my Ford 300 only made 120hp stock, and his Chevy 235 I6 in his '54 makes 150.
250 gross is about right. But a stock 302 truck probobly has about 280 in the same token.
I love the 300 but belive she is all that and a bunch of jazz is kinda ignorant. My friends laugh at it but not one of them can pull a loaded car trailer with their V8 in 4th at 15mph!
I usually do, especially since he doesn't own much of anything that was made before 1971 when they went to net. 57 Chevy V8, 54 Chevy I6, 69 Camaro V8, 54 military jeep I4, etc. etc. So my 120 number doesn't make much sense. I usually only throw it out to compare it to modern vehicles, but try to "figure" what a the gross would be with my mods when talking numbers with him.
Yup, the 300 isn't for everything, but it's awesome for what it does. I generally figure V8s are for doing things quickly, the I6 is for doing it with strength. And when climbing steep old mining roads to go camping, I can lug up them all day long. I'm not concerned about going fast.
