I've been looking for a front mount tire carrier for my '85 F-250 Extended cab. Years ago you could get them from Checker, Kragen, JC Whitney and other places. In the past 6 months I've been through 6 states and dozens of web-sites. Everywhere I go I look in places that carry truck accesories or tire accesories and have come up empty. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me a clear link or info on a site that may carry such an item.
I tow a 5th wheel and just don't have the room in the bed to store a spare. There is no way I'm going to use the under bed carrier that came with the truck.
Any Ideas folks? Thanks
They are a pretty basic thing, and esy to make, but I wouldn't want one. In the winter it would be fine, but as soon as the temp goes up, you will need all the air you can get through the radiator, especially towing. If your truck is a Supercab, you could probably put one on the roof, but why not get one of those rear basket carriers for your trailer, and put the tire in there? Why not in the trailer?
I've been through all the pro's and cons in the past, I appreciate your comments but the front is where I want to mount it. When I lived in Phoenix I had a front carrier on my old Ford truck and found that mounting it at least 6 inches away from the grille gives plenty of flow, in over 10 years I never had an overheating problem. The back of my trailer is 33 feet from the back of the truck and with my disability I don't need the extra steps. The roof is out of the question and storing it in the trailer does me no good when I'm unhooked. I was thinking about having someone fabricate one for me, but I've only been in Nevada for a short time and don't know who to see.
If anyone has the answer to my first post please reply, Thanks
Hi-
Here's a solution. I see you have an '85 250. Get a front mount receiver hitch. Then get one of those receiver mount tire carriers, I seen alot of them in Jeep catalogs. You can always use a locking pin.
I will look through the garage in the morning sometime tomorrow and see if ours is still laying around from back in 85. I doubt it, but if it is, you can have it for the price of shipping.
What about Range-Rover style? Just drop it on the hood! Just had a thought though- If you do find a fabricator, why not do it SCS style, and mount it between the inner and outer bedwalls in front of the right rear tire? It can hang down a bit, that's not a big deal.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I still want to mount the tire forward. As for overheating, My truck normally runs below 180 with a load in the summer with temperatures above 95, I have an oversized cooling system and normally don't run loaded over 65 and make frequent stops ( about every 100 miles or so) I have run vehicles with front mounts before and have never overheated, I've lived 30 out of my 51 years in the hot west and know the limitations. I have dual gauges which check temerature before and after the cooling system they normally show between a 15-2o degree differential. I don't race anymore. And am set for towing my King of the Road 5th wheel. When I want speed I run the Harley or the 91 Mustang.
Thanks wildjohn, I checked them on the net and found nothing, but I did request a catalog. There were a couple of other things that they did have that I could use for another project.
Thanks Ford-Six, not a bad Idea but when I checked under the bed I found I would need to re-route the exhaust. Directly below that position sits my 2 glass pacs. Sounded good though. Gas Tank is on the other side. Thanks anyway.
I am still looking.............
Moved a lot of stuff around in that shop in the last 17 years! I did however find a lot of old Porshe and Monza/Buick parts......... but I guess that is no help.
I will look again tomorrow, but it is looking a little grim.
