Well when I got the truck, i'd go to start it and the WTS light would come on then i'd here the plugs cycling, the truck would then start and the controller would cycle a few more times, at 10 seconds the most then turn off.
Now though, I go to start it and if cold the controller won't kick on, my over ride button won't even work to turn them on. Once the truck gets some heat though the relay starts clicking but sometimes it'll continue for 10 mins, after the truck is fully warm. I know that's not right.
My question is, can I just rewire my switch into a bypass and not use the factory setup?
The relay might just be bad. Get a relay for an 86 and replace the one on the controler with it. Yes you can rewire it to bypas the factory setup but if the relay is bad it still won't work.

Does it come off in a assembly? I guess I'll be doing that tonight.
My dads 92 has the same issue... no glow, but once you finally get it started, and some heat in the engine then the glow plugs will kick on on the next start.
I dont mean to hyjack. My problem is that my wts light comes on for about 7 seconds, but im pretty sure i have no power to the glow plugs. Cycle them once, twice, three times.. doesnt even phase it. I dont have a test light atm to verify this, but if anyone else has had a similar problem and know what the issue is i would love to hear some advice.
i had the same problem.... i just went down to orielly and got the whole controller and relay set up.... cost about 150 bucks but she fires right up every single time now.... and didnt have to modify anything or run wires and switches an what not
i bought the relay by itself first but that only led me to determine the controller was bad since they would then come on..... but never shut off
lol, that sucks. Sadly $150 is out of my price range atm... i noticed the local pick a part has added a couple 7.3s to the place... even tho they got rid of my dents to make room for em... but anywho, might just pick up the relay and see what happens.
should only take 5 minutes. Less if your turbo idi.
Well it is non-turbo. But I think it'd take a little longer then 5 mins. I have to pull the whole assembly don't I? Then I gotta wire the new relay correctly. Never done this before either.
No, you don't need to pull the controller ... You can replace the relay on top of the controller without removing it... Wirings the same.
For things like that I use twist ties (from bread) to hold the groups of wires together to prevent scattering and confusion... Note a color in each of the (4) four groups and yur all set, put em back where they came from, remove the twist ties and enjoy the fruits (or miseries) of your labor!
