I am looking at the cv conversion and really want to give it a go. Since the budget for the project is going to be a pay as I go deal I am looking to upgrade in stages, front suspension first with power steering and brakes. Has anyone tried powering the crown vic rack with a saginaw pump. I think it would be possible to mount one on the 223, does anyone have experience with this? I am open to suggestions on this and what to do for power brakes. The truck is a 64 6 cyl. with a 3 spd. I am thinking at this point keep the drivetrain as that is the trucks character, but damn that steering is ridiculous. I am going to check the kingpins this week and most likely will find I just need to suck it up. Thanks for your help.
He means the common chevy pump. I would use a newer small GM metric pump on a custom plate bracket. easier to mount. As to mounting the 223 on the CVs aluminum cross member, that will need custom mounts.
Thanks for the replies. I had a feeling that once this crossmember gets swapped its the whole chain reaction to customizing the entire truck. Well if i need new motormounts and a bracket has to be fabbed why not swap engine for one with an available bracket and pump on it, etc. I need to wait and plan this out all the way. I'll focus on bodywork first before I go after any mechanical mods.
There are only a few engines that will really fit on the cross member. the 4.6 cammer and Chevrolet. As the cammer has a really shallow front sump on the pan just like Mouse and rats. Anything else is a crap shoot with the front mount oil pump on fords.
Why do all the work to lower the truck then have to high center the engine.
That's why my 302 is on the floor & the 4.6 is going in. It was cheaper to put in the new engine that to add A/C, PS & a rear sump pan to my old 302. Especially when you consider that if I was going to drop the pan - I might as well check the bearings, replace the oil pump, water pump... pretty soon you're into it for a full rebuild.
